Unbelieveable Weather!

Okay, how do we go from the mid 70's to low 80's last week, to snow on Mt. Hamilton, Mt. Diablo, and Mt. Tam this week?!!! Some Bay Area towns may even get a few snowflakes tonight into tomorrow! However, I think this spells disaster for all of the trees, shrubs, and perennials that were tricked into thinking it was spring. California truly is an unusual place!

I dunno... this isn't really a natural weather pattern... I think global warming...

Glad to hear that you had a good butterfly year, Paul. Missed your posts this summer. I take it that you survived the drought with still having bfs around. I am no expert on Monarchs by any means. But, if you have had some unusually warm weather, and milkweed still growing, it's been my experience that the males can easily go out of diapause, and seek out newly emerged females, or elderly females unable to fight them off, and they will continue to lay eggs. The older females will continue to hang around and lay eggs until they die. Monarchs are tropical, and can not survive freezing temps. If they are in a very well protected wooded area, they may survive a light winter, but not a hard freeze with temps below freezing for a long period of time. They have trouble flying at temps below 55 degrees, and are paralyzed at temps below 40 degrees. Keep us posted on your Monarchs, Paul. Tdog, I can't believe that you are still finding eggs. :) Your temps must be warm enough for your milkweed to continue growing. How wonderful for them to find your haven. Wow, Miss Sherry. This is awfully early for them to be emerging. I am sure that they are very confused with the weather. Are your moths still overwintering?

Temps here in s.e.Iowa have been 70-77F for a week and last night was only 57F which is about the avg high this time of year!unbelievable to have the windows open at night at the end of Oct and early Nov-but you Know what usually happens this time of year right after this kind of warmth,so I won't ruin it!LOL Andy-make sure your washy stays DRY if your not bringing it in yet,mine have seen low 20s without much damage to speak of but I think I will spare them from that happening again! Mike,I sent you an e-mail regarding the bananas,let me know if you get it.

Yes, we've has similar weather here on the other side of the pond (Lake Michigan). I think I've had to water once since planting. Lots of warm sunny days and bi-weekly rains, mostly at night. I didn't even lose any plants to that flooding that parts of Wisconsin got in early June. We got about 4 inches of rain over a 2-3 day period and the tomato plants LIKED it. We are in heat wave here in So. Alberta as well. Records being broken. Plus teens C, sun shine, snow melting. Jemdandy, I know what you mean about the birds. The Pheasant roosters are fighting here, and although that is a normal thing for them to do before they claim their hens, January is way to early for that to start. Worse, because there is still lots of snow in the ditches, they are fighting on the highway, and are too dumb to stop it for traffic. Thank goodness the traffic out here is very minimal this time of year, or there would be poofed birds on the road. Marie-ndcal, going to get down to -11C here by Monday/Tuesday and then start warming up again. Long range is for +15C again a week Friday, so hopefully that system will reach you guys as well, and the cold snap will be short lived. After last winter we deserve a warmer one this year.

While I think global warming is imminent, I have to agree with Al. I've only been here for 25 years, but winter-spring is always unstable and unpredictable where weather patterns are concerned.

I've lived in California most of my life and have only once or twice seen a winter that generally tracked with day-to-day historical norms. The years where rainfall tracks with the norms or is below average, temperatures are usually all over the place. In a winter where temperatures are predictably cool and highs and lows match historical records there is usually above average rainfall.

Averages are merely means of extremes. Global warming is blamed if the temperatures are too high or too low, if there is excessive rain or drought. A theory that can explain every possible outcome explains nothing (lacks falsifiability).

Global warming only predicts changes in means over time. An alteration of the prevailing weather patterns that lasts for longer than a drought cycle (5-7 years) may be important, this year's weather won't be except so far as it reflects a sustained shift in climate.

Climate change trends happen over such a long time period no human lives long enough to observe them. Many temperature fluctuations will occur over a hundred years but they do not establish a 'trend'. Al
