Myrtillocactus and other branching cacti.

I'm really interested in freely-branching, columnar cacti. However, a lot of them seem to have fairly slow growth rates, or take a long time to branch. And some of the apparently quicker-growing ones, like Cereus peruvianus, don't seem to actually branch at all.

Given it's prevalence in grafting, I got the impression that Myrtillocactus geometrizans might do this. Just curious, but how long take to form branches, and are there any growing conditions you can provide that would convince it to branch more quickly? I tried looking at pictures online, and some fairly short cacti seem to have branches, whereas others don't appear to branch till they're a lot taller. so, is it a fairly individual thing?
