Frost damaged pencil cactus-HELP!!!

karrin

I'm hoping somebody can give me some good advice on how to save my beautiful, severely frost-damaged 6' tall pencil cactus/tree. I've had this plant for over 8 years, and it has a nice 4" diameter trunk, and has grown into a lovely tree specimen. Unfortunately, despite covering with sheets, this winter's cold was too much for it. I am left with the tall trunk, and only one leggy branch at the very top of the tree. I'm heartbroken, and not sure if I should try to top the whole thing off in an attempt to help it generate new growth, or if I should just leave it and let it be ridiculously spindly and lopsided. Any advise on how to save my beloved succulent would be greatly appreciated....thanks!!!
