Any idea what the second plant is? It looks like a field-collected E. fusca, but that's just a guess.

I liked the third pic as well. I had no idea that Proteas can produce their blooms from the ground...very odd.

Lzrddr, I'm not sure why you were rejected, but you can tell them that Paracelsus (Brad) and Cactusmcharris (Jeffrey) vouch for you. I'm sure they would recognize your palmbob ID from Dave's garden. Dan is the former site owner and is still a forum administrator. Josiah is the current site owner and administrator.

Don't be upset if you can't get access to thegardenforums.org. They do their best to seem exclusive and make it hard to gain access...but once you do, it's just another plant forum. Other than Cactus Jordi, there are no experts there, although admittedly, there are fewer questions about Jade plants. Don't waste your time with this site....intead go for bccs.org.uk or cactiguide.com

That I know the people who run the site, and that from my experience and correspondence with them they're not elitist.

I don't know why Geoff is experiencing the problems he is - certainly my experience in joining was much different.

I've never found anyone there like that, but once again, this new 'standards for joining' is something new to me.

This will hold zero interest for you since it doesn't feature Cactus Jordi in the response, but for the rest of you, I think it's important to illustrate the reason for -R's discontent. -R, I think you've demonstrated both here and there why your commentary is offensive. I'm somewhat happy I get to read you only here. Honestly, if you weren't so sharp I'd be out a few laughs, but sometimes your cutting commentary should be left on the floor.

I was completely incensed that thegardenforums.org refused to allow lzrddr to join. As he said, "problem was they said I was not convincing enough in my reasons for wanting to join," despite Josiah's (a site admin's) claim that "I've never once denied any person who entered anything even remotely gardening related." Someone's lying, and I know whom I believe.

That made me really mad. I was actually trying to stick up for lzrddr....if anyone should be able to get into any plant forum, it's him!

If that site were meant only for professional botanists and other academics, I could understand why they might ask for justification in terms of knowledge and experience before allowing access. But it isn't...it's just another plant forum.

I don't know what happened here, but I can tell you that the ONLY reason for the text entry is to sort out the bots from the humans. TGF is besieged with bot requests for membership, and when one does sometimes get through, they collect email addresses for spammers, advertise, etc.

A little history: TGF was started several years ago when a number of folks got fed up with the new terms of service imposed by the new owners of this site, iVillage. Without wanting to rehash that debate, some of us were opposed to this sites claim of copyright for any picture we posted, even if that photo was on a third-party web server, like photobucket. So Dan, a nursery owner, created TGF so we would still have a place to play. To his surprise, the C&S crowd far outnumbered any other gardening interest by a huge margin. We are all grateful to him for creating a fun and safe place for us to share without losing our rights to our own words and photographs. A few months ago, tired of the constant battle with bots, Dan transferred ownership of the site to Josiah. I have never known Josiah to be elitist, exclusionary, unwelcoming, disagreeable, etc. He is a good guy, really.

Because TGF was started by a relatively experienced group of growers, the level of discussion over there is different than this site. There are almost never posts about dead or dying Jade plants, just to note one difference. After spending some years away from this site, a few of us started to post here from time to time. I am still very wary of posting photos like I used to, but I do enjoy discussions here and the opportunity to help some of the C&S beginners.

So that's my story, and I'm sticking too it. Neither TGF, nor Dan, nor Josiah, or the members of TGF are elitists. When beginners find there way to the site, they are always welcomed graciously, assuming of course, that they are polite in return. It's too bad you decided to join and be obnoxious, R. Perhaps you could try again, as you certainly have a lot of knowledge to share. As long as you can refrain from posting oddly disturbing smoking rabbit photos, I'm certain you would be welcomed too.

Thanks to Brad, the shining light of clarification. Can we all get back to being lovely again? I want to express my appreciation to all the knowledgeable people on this site who take time to sort out my beginner's misconceptions. Please don't go away. My rotting jade needs you. Just kidding;)

Two points:

Maybe it was different in the past, but if you read their current terms of service, you'll notice that they never claim copyright over images or anything else that you post on any of their sites. What they do claim is a non-exclusive license, in short, to publish your work. Since they're a website, if you didn't grant them that right, they couldn't show your posts.

What they claim in their ToS goes beyond that, so they could, theoretically, publish a book and use your images. But that doesn't happen in the real world.

It sounds to me like the system refused his registration by mistake and sent him a pre-written message. Or maybe he was refused because the admin had a dozen registrations to deal with, refused the wrong one by mistake and didn't realize. Again, he'd have got the pre-written message.

And then after posting here, he got hold of this Josiah and cleared up the matter.

So really, no lies, just the information he had at the time. But if you want to throw around mud because you got egg on your face, by all means.
