End of season Pineapples

Not sure if I'll try to hold these on the plant through the winter here in Houston. Another month of summer and they'd be ripe on the plant. They take up a bit of room, but the taste of plant ripened is like candy.

Thanks Phil. Here in Houston it takes about 2 years from cutting the top off a pineapple to first flower/fruit. Then a plant will make a couple Pineapples each following year.

Being in the right place at the right time sure helps if you are a frugal shopper, thrift store browser, or garage sale junkie. "It doesn't hurt to ask." is the best advice I can give anyone looking for a bargain. This year I couldn't afford to put out the annuals that I am now growing. Didn't start as many indoors as I would have liked to but I have plenty of American Seed packets unopened yet. I got them by asking at the local hardware store last fall. He gave me all the unsold seed packets in the cardboard rack. About a brown grocery bag full for $2. Lots of veggie seeds in there plus annual flower seeds. I think it was worth the expenditure.

Thanks Jim! Sorry I didnt see your response. I notice that we both reply to messages at the same time pretty often, haha. We got about 2 days in the mid 90s already this year (and more than our fair share of cool weather), but I'm hoping that once (if) the 80s every get consistent the P. geayi will finally flush! I wanted some blooms this year! I agree, Ensetes are definitely one of the fastest growing bananas and I think part of the reason for their fast growth is their cool tolerance which gets them to start growing in the spring when days are only comfortable and not opressively hot. The sabas should get some good growth in with the warmer weather this weekend and hopefully warm weather will be permanent soon! -Alex

You can basically do everything with green tomatoes that you would do with red tomatoes but have to account for the extra acidity. You can cook with them, and not just fried green tomatoes (although I love fried green tomatoes). They're very good roasted. Do a google search--there will be tons of green tomato recipes. I make small batches of green tomato chutney which I give away to friends and family. I also make a green tomato marmelade that I love (I first tasted something like it in France). It's an olive green/amber color that is actually not unappetizing as it sounds and tastes like citrus marmelade with overtones of tomato aroma. They also make very good pickles. I prefer them as vinegar pickles than as lactoferments, unless I make kimchi with them, which I enjoy.

L Clark, Winnipeg Parks is probably 4x4 but she has had no winter die back in the couple of years I have had her so I fully expect 6x6 next year or the year after. When I got Golden Wings I didn't know how big I would get. After we planted it I saw it at the Denver botanical gardens and spotted on in a neighbor's back yard growing in a wild spot (not a garden bed). Both were bigger than I had room for in the spot we planted it so we dug it out and gave it away on Nextdoor. It also had no winter die back.

My brother on Oahu has trouble growing pineapples in an area that used to be a pineapple field. His dogs go crazy after them. I also have found varmits are fond of them. I now wrap mine in chicken wire when they start to get ripe.

nope my last ones arfe still finding them still havt put up the fence yet. i need to wait a fortnight as i cinked a mussle in my neck and cant realy move it much at the moment.
