First Cecropia/Second Luna
Comments (14)I always figured the best time for any moth or butterfly to emerge in spring was when their host plant has started to make new growth, Tiffy. Big moths are only supposed to live about a week, so if they emerge too early, even if they manage to find a partner and mate, what would the female lay her eggs on? She could lay them on bare branches and maybe the eggs could last long enough in cold weather, but wouldn't it make more sense for her to be able to lay her eggs on new growth, which is what they like? So, I put my cages on the front porch when new growth has begun - if I were you, whenever that happens where you are, that'd be the right time. Dan, I saw my first female spicebush swallowtail yesterday, and I think I saw a black female tiger today - I know it was a big black swallowtail, so maybe things are starting to look up. The cecropia and the luna males both left - maybe I'll get a female moth soon. Sherry...See MoreFire Island has another scape emerging NOW?!
Comments (11)Ci-lantro, just send those babies south if they are unhappy. I will put them in my fragrant playground and send you some that are not happy down this way. :) But, even here, the plantaginea bloomed late, with the blooms just end of September withering on the scape and one big fat seedpod to show for it. Two of the extended fragrant family, Bennie McRae and Mariachi, wound up being the last bloomers this year.....but I haven't looked for new scapes, so perhaps I should. Our average first frost is not until some time in November, but nothing has been normal for several years and I've forgotten what date that might be. Did you get a cool snap and then warm back up? Who knows what triggers the urge to bloom......of course, I suppose you could really nip it in the bud and cut them off to avoid wasting the stored energy that will get them through your much colder winters....See MoreMoving a just emerging 4 year old peony?
Comments (7)I know it is not the optimal time. But I installed a large decorative gate right in the middle of the garden. The peony is right smack dab in the center of the foreground. Even if it started growing well this year, it would be too tall, and no longer work with the design. I don’t want to wait till fall to get the other low height plantings in. The other peonies have done so well, that I do blame the light conditions. Though I don’t recall specific details of this planting, I am aware of the planting depth issue, as I had a non-blooming peony at a previous house, 30 years ago, due to not knowing enough at that time. The ones I planted since 2012 have bloomed. The big question is that I don’t know how big of a root ball this one will have (with 4 shoots so far). I will try working around it with a pitchfork first, and see what I can feel without chopping something off. Like a 1 foot + diameter? 18 inches?...See MoreHas gray had it's day? Comments (48)no..I spent a lot of time in tile shops until I found the ones I love enough:) I'm pretty crazy about tiles. Other things, I might not give a damn-tiles, I do actually love. Many many shops we checked out, and the ones I worked with in the end were nothing like Flor and Decor or any other big store for that matter. Different selection, quality, service. But took us lots of time to discover them. The people who make them-these tiles I'm talking about- are very good craftsmen. Believe me. It borders art..thus hard to put price on that, since art is subjective. You attach to it value that's intangible somewhat. what's a rip off? if you ask me my today's visit to a doctor was a rip off and put me in a bad mood. But he's a doctor, and I'm not. He's not a bad doctor too. But I'm really sorry I went there, at this point. I also know some very good doctors-there, I don't mind paying. I mean I do mind but what can I do. It's just that with the doctors I might unfortunately have no choice but to go and pay. And not neccessarily they'll tell me something encouraging either. The result is vaguer, so to say:) With tile, on the other hand,I can decide to continue to dream:) Or choose tiles I still love but can afford, which I eventually did....See Morerunmede
