Yellow, wrinkled swamp milkweed!

Every year, some new weirdness. My swamp milkweed came up looking great, but then interspersed in a couple of places, it grew very strange looking and sick. It is yellowish, and very wrinkled. Excuse my ignorance of botanical terms, but the little ascending leaves that appear inside the main leaves are of very strange, elongated proportions.

What's wrong with it? Is this cucumber mosaic virus? Is it spider mites (didn't see any)? To be safe, I cut it down with extreme prejudice.

I did not offer any to my hand raised cats, but I am alarmed because for reasons unknown, two young cats were vomiting and died.

What's wrong with my milkweed, and what should I do?
