How old are your babies, and how many did you get? I love reptiles, too. I think, because they live in the deserts near the BIGGEST cacti in the world, that they are never too far off topic... : )

These guys hatched TODAY!!!! I am not sure if there is 4 or 5. Four for sure ! They will be available for shipping next year! And yes-- Chucks inhabit Prime Cactus Habitat in the Sonoran & Lower Mojave Deserts .

LOL I'd love a bare root chuckwalla to. I would never have thought a pick of a lizard would be off topic... I reckon a cactus garden is a rightful habitat for any lizard. I get lots of little skinks in my glasshouse, & I frequently see one peeping at me from behind one of my pots, they're such a joy to have around!

When hatched, these Chucks look a bit different from their parents. The young have more banding than their parents. I believe they are one of the largest lizzards in the US. I know the Gila's are the largest so Chucks maybe 2nd or 3rd largest. A good healthy male can measure in a 18" and They are herbivors. David, did you hatch these out yourself?

In a way you could say I hatched these out-- but I really do nothing to help or hurt the chances of hatching eggs. My chucks have that 30 ft X 30 ft pen to run in, eat in, breed in, lay eggs in, hibernate in, & have eggs to hatch if lucky ! The gal digs her own nesting cavity, lays the eggs and emerges HUNGRY !!! All I do is keep a look out for babies in Sept-- or in this case--October!
They ship easy too--- put em in a small box full of shredded paper and place in larger box full of peanuts/ shredded paper for padding. If very hot or cold--- ship 24 hr Express. If weather conditions are nice ( like now) --- I use Priority Mail ( 2-3 day delivery). Nothing to it!!
Chucks are next to Gilas as far as the largest US lizard. Adults usually lose the banding. Some females retain remnant bands & the males take on their own color. Different areas can have distinct color phases.

And these cute babies will be available to you the consumer in about a year!!!!!! LOL

David, can you get pics of the parent, I'd like to see them. I used to work in a pet store and we had a shipment of Chucks come in. I was so tempted to get one, I should have. The next day they were all sold...I snoozed, I losed.

If only I could import one to Tas, but I'm afraid the quarantine people would not allow it.

Our biggest lizard is the Goanna, and it's a beautiful critter, it grows to more than 11/2 metres. They are found on the mainland not here in Tas.
