The Cryptanthus looks more like 'Nivea' than 'Elaine' to me, though.

'Norman Bates' looks like a bigger plant than I thought, although it might just be (all together now) growing conditions. It's supposed to be a cv. of 'Hannibal Lecter', and my Hannibal's not that big. Someone just gave me a packet of seeds from HL (presumeably selfed) and they've germinated, so I'm very excited to see what will come out of it!

I have Pimiento, Luna, Amazing Grace and 4 Hannibal Lechter knockoffs (HL, Clarise, Gov's Plea and Tunisia) so I think I would pass on Norman Bates. They all look too similar. Thanks for posting these!

Pink sensation X royal burgundy is always a nice addition to any collection. Luna looks a bit rough around the edges.

You're right, Bob, Norman is Hannibal crossed back to Tiger. I was thinking it was an F2 of Hannibal, so that would explain the larger size. Well, let's see..... I could buy one or I could just cross the two myself next time they bloom. You guys probably thought I was joking when I said I do my own hybrids because I'm cheap. No joke, LOL

Actually, I think we'll be seeing a lot of Hannibal and Tiger hybrids coming out, and a lot of them are going to start looking very similar. When something that good and that different comes along nobody can resist working with it. I picked this one up from my local neighborhood hybridizer, ostensibly HL x (Big Red x Purple Paint). Shows a lot of HL/Tiger characteristics and not much from the other side so far:

No, I don't own this plant; no, it wasn't available but it didn't come from here so it must be out there somewhere; and no, I don't remember what the cross was but it's not a variegated HL.

Bob has dragged me over to this site. I've decided to get into some of his broms, but I keep pushing orchid divisions on him in return.
These plants from tropiflora were picked out in a mad half-hour dash around their greenhouses. I was on a buying trip for the Gardens' new epiphyte house and had an opportunity to stop by tropiflora before we went to the airport. It was like one of those timed shopping sprees that you win where you get one minute to throw everything in your cart. Although I wish that I had more time, I'm pretty pleased with what I picked out, as well as the Bils that we got from Jim Irvin in a newer post. Bob and I are "going shopping" off of the Michael's Broms website on Monday- we are going to have an awesome brom display.

FYI, the above was written by Terri,who is an A-#1 staff gardener at the BBG,along with Don and Doug.And together,with their supporting staff,and help of volunteers over the last couple of years,have turned an average Botanical Garden into one of the best in the country.Most people that have'nt visited for years are amazed at the changes and progress made,all part of a 10 year remodeling plan.Terri and Don have been brainwashed by me to order tons of bromeliads [well,a lot,anyway] to build up the displays throughout the Gardens,and the next task is to furnish the nearly completed Florida epiphyte house,featuring all the flora and fauna of Florida.
This is a fun job. Life is good!
