This just popped up on my list, which is strangely delayed. Again, no biggie. If they bother you, pluck them out or turn them under (without disturbing a plant if present!) Otherwise, you can ignore them if you want to. The only slight warning is that if they're indoors (at this point, likely) keep children and pets away from the mushrooms. Without positive ID, we can't tell if they're toxic or not. And if you're allergic to fungal spores (I sure am), you may not want to allow the mushrooms to remain. Most mushrooms don't bother me, however.

Sharon: I tried to make some of my own this past summer. Ya know what? (trying very hard not to laugh really loud) - buy some on line. I'm serious. This stuff was so nasty smelling. I took fresh water seaweed - lake water - rotting leaves - put it all in a garbage can in the sun. And let it COOK. The plants LOVED it - however - you couldn't get within 10 feet of it. Had to hold your breath to dunk the watering can in it. DH would wretch when he got within 10 feet of it. And was always yelling about the stench. The neighbor said she was looking in the flower beds for something that died. LOLOL. . .I'm laughing now. When I offered to get rid of it (gawd I can hardly type) - DH's face - when I said ROTFLMAO When I said grab the other side and put it in a wheelbarrow - you guide the front. His face turned ghost white because he. . . Oh it hurts. . . He realized what would happen if it tipped down hill - spilling on him . . . My sides hurt. . . He just looked at me blinking through the sweat. . .and then yelled NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Oh Sharon - just buy a smaller bottle on line. LOLOL

Honest, the secret is good planting soil that leads to good root systems that in turn leads to good growth above the soil. If you stop to think about the soil these grow in naturally, the mostly grow in the outer edges of treed areas and on valley floors, both of which are high nutrient areas from decaying/deposited plant/tree foliage. The roots are the plant's engine so good planting holes makes for good top growth. Also, those particular Brugs were 2nd year seedlings, the subsequent years after I cut those back to bring in for the winter, they never grew quite that tall again. I do not use Osmocote, I used a granular fertilizer in the planting holes that is 6-12-6 combination if I recall correctly, along with the mushroom compost. I also add grass clippings all summer long to the Brug gardens, and 12" of leaves in the fall but now I maybe only fertilize 2X's during the growing season. Remember too, I have been playing with Brugs and their needs for 10-12 years. :)

Sandra, It's a basal stem. They can really shoot up out of nowhere. They will Y eventually but if they're too close to each other, they will rub when the wind blows them & open themselves to infection. If you don't like it, cut it off or wait until the stem has matured enough to get lenticles or those little pre-root nubbies & start a new plant. I have no luck getting green stems to root so I would wait until later in the season if I wanted cuttings from it. You can cut it off short now or wait until it gets tall & have one big one or several shorter cuttings. I usually cut mine off as I want standards (one tall trunk). I have one in a huge pot that I like to leave the extra stems on so it's a nice full bush. Linda
