I'm here. Been doing research on Type 2 diabetes and hunting down suitable recipes since DH has been diagnosed with it. Grainlady has been a big help from the Cooking Forum.

I've given up trying to do the big stuff in the gardens..... like pruning trees and the big manzanitas. Had the tree pruners in today. I'm going to get a gardener to come and help with more.

I don't have any pretty pictures to show. You have such beautiful roses, Leslie.

I'll have to look up the Cooking Forum then and see what's up. I've got a couple of diabetes cookbooks but always looking for new recipes, I love to bake.

I'm glad you're not trying to do the big stuff any longer, there comes a time it's just easier and safer to just hire someone. Then make sure they do it the way you want them too:)

this is about a third of the large rose garden area at the end of Oct. All the roses are still blooming strong right now though. This is really all minis showing in the pic though.

I'm sure your neighbors were happy to see veggies, even bolting crops, over the weedy yard, Spaghetina. Here's a couple of suggestions I have from my time growing organically up in SF and Marin. 1) Most of those flowers of the bolted veggies are edible and tasty. While the leaf flavor has turned bitter through the winter and the taste change that comes with bolting, the blossoms often gain a very interesting taste that is great topping salads or lightly fried in certain dishes. 2) If like germinating your own crops from seed, remember which of your crops are heirloom (their seeds will usually produce true) and which are F1 or other hybrids -- it's seed is typically still viable, but may have very different characteristics than the parent. The GW seed exchange forum is a great way to get those exotic seeds you mentioned w/o having to pay catalog prices or drive all over the Bay area, but you need your own seeds to reciprocate. Some of the best plants & veggies in my yard are from trades I've made with other GW members. 3) To my way of thinking, your soil mix seems too heavily focused on decomposed organic matter and doesn't take advantage of the alkaline SF clay topsoil and it's associated soil flora. The compost/purchased soil is great for nitrogen and drainage and you can artificially pump up the P/K/Fe to grow good veggies & plants in it, but organic amendments like blood & bone meal, fish emulsion, seaweed and others need bacteria & fungi to free the nutrients for your crop's roots. That's generally not true for soluble inorganic amendments, which is why they are popular. There's definitely a risk of adding weed seeds by using your yard's topsoil in the garden beds, but that soil food web is necessary for growing good organic crops, IMO. For plants that need lots of N and like great drainage, I go 2/3 purchased soil/fully composted organic matter and 1/3 native topsoil. For tomatoes, peppers and others that suffer in N-rich soils, I use 2/3 native, 1/3 organic matter.

LOL...no, no, NO to fileting, Scott! ;D The bluegill is in the house in a 20L aquarium w/ an airstone. I have no filter for it but it's just him in there. I only have it half full b/c I couldn't carry it full. LOL I will probably get more water, bring it to house temp and finish filling it up tomorrow. So from your response, I SHOULD feed him, right? I didn't know if I should or not b/c it has been cold and he is just "warming up" after the week long cold snap. This might be a dumb question but would he be "happier" if I net another bluegill to hang out w/ him in there? Or is that just an invitation for filter issues (w/ no filter present). Thx!

Oh thanks you guys for all the responses! My roses - OH I MISS THEM! I used to have boquets all over my house - the spring and fall flush were amazing! I have been cutting back the few I have all week - they grow HUGE so fast - got a huge thorn jammed in my thumb yesterday and had to dig it out. It still hurts!! Ok - the tomatoes - so I should give up on the heirloom idea and grow Celebrity and Roma's - right?? I have never really, really canned anything - but I saw it done when I was a kid and I was thinking we could handle it - lol - but freezing sounds so much easier! I'd love some more info on that too. In the past - I had flower beds that I created "lasagna garden" style - as far doing tomatoes - it's too late for me to do that so hmm... How many plants do you guys think I need to get a decent amount of fruit? I just want to stop or at least reduce buying canned tomato sauce, diced tomatoes and all that jazz to cook with ... it would be great if I could pull out my own jar or frozen bag of stuff - lol! Even if I have to give it up for this year and just have four or five plants - some tomatoes are better than none!! Heather

A2gemini~ I am loving the input so far! Let me explain why the cabinets are the way they are. I had quoted cabinets at about 13,000 online, big box stores came in higher and custom were way higher. Had a general idea about the baking center, passthrough, second oven where the fridge would go and sink/dishwasher. MIL was in Re-Store and saw cabinets and bought them on the spot. Hickory raised panel, solid wood. She wanted the island and figured she knew someone who would take the rest of the cabinets, either me or her sister who is re-doing her kitchen. Since then we have added a window, removed an exterior door across from the pantry and created what we have now based on these cabinets. I wanted painted wood cabinets and we currently have 850$ in awesome cabinets (yes that need to be painted) But I figure I can spurge on appliances at this point. The shelf to the right of the sink is to balance the visual impact of having different sized cabinets on the same wall across from each other over the sink. The desk area is a byproduct of placing what we had where we could, and I think I'm loving the idea of it. Might put my computer there, mount a monitor on the wall, hide the mouse and keyboard in the drawer. Its really growing on me. I also figure great place for working on recipes, or kids to do homework while I wash veggies. The sliding doors will be on the pantry side so there shouldn't be any loss of counter space on the kitchen side. That space will be about 44" but with the ability to turn around to the island for more space. Thanks for the input!!

Here's Pat! Just took a look at the back yard,what a mess!
BUT...some of the Mums have survived the neglect, if I can manage all this paraphenalia(sp) I'll take some pictures! Now where is Brenda!

Hiya Pat! Good to hear from you:) I heard you had a little problem though, I'm very sorry about that and you're having a tough time getting around town now. I hope you can figure a way around that.

I hope you're feeling ok and would love to see any pics you can manage to take. I even put up a statue that says the weeds are free to take:) Are you doing any crafts?

I heard from Brenda, she said that her FIL is still having bad health problems and she has to be on the phone a lot and since she has dial up that means she needs to keep the line free. She said he dog's femur got broken and she's playing nurse and her DH is working though she's upset with him that it happened on his watch. He fell out of the back of the truck.

She says she misses us though and she was worried about you, Pat.

PLEASE...no need for anyone to worry. what will be will be & all that b.s! DD makes sure that I get and take all the RX's and is rather enjoying bossing me around. And frankly, it's rather nice to have someone else do the thinking for a change. Most importantly is keeping a sense of humor and we manage that pretty well. I got some pix this a.m. but now the PC is going tempermental on me, I can't believe sometimes that I actually talk to this machine & of course it doesn't do a thing that I ask. Well, I'm starting to ramble so will stop here. Love to all of you, please keep in touch! Pat

I just picked a bucket of Olives. I got some lye at the hardware store and am now looking thru' all my old notes -- and Pat's booklet -- to see what to do. I have some really ripe ones too -- soft -- that I might try putting in the juicer to see if I can get any oil out. HAH! Wouldn't that be something.
