Help Me on WW II facs for school paper,Please!!

My great grand-son has an assignment to write a paper on what one of his relatives did during WW II. I can recall the food stamps, shoe stamps, gasoline stamps & meat stamps, but I can't remember what they were all for or how many a year we got. The USO that my Mom was a supervisor, etc. for the nightly entertainment, I use to go & just have fun. There were rent controls, shortages of ladies hosiery, the aircraft factories & the migration of people coming to Calif to work. If you can remember some specifics I would really appreciate some help here.I do remember my first visit to the Navy Hospital in San Diego when they brought so many service personnel back from Pearl Harbor. I started in their teenage program in visiting these young men & how devastating it was to me. We were all so young that I don't think we understood the severity of war.

My foster dad worked in the Long Beach Naval Shipyard during WWII and lived in Long Beach. He said that all the homes in Long Beach had to have the windows painted over or covered in order prevent light from escaping at night. Vehicles could not use their headlights at night. He said the the military had laid out streets with lights out in the desert so that should Japanese aircraft fly in they would see the lights out in the desert and bomb those. He said that every night he could hear the ratcheting of winches letting up balloons attached to steel cables which were designed to sheer off the wings of incoming enemy aircraft. He said there were anti-aircraft batteries located in numerous places in Long Beach. I would imagine San Diego did similar things.

Have you tried doing a Google search or visiting some historical museums in San Diego?

Mikey, thanks so much, this is the type of info. I needed to remind me of stuff. I had forgotten about the camouflage
surrounding factories, shipping piers, etc.
I was raised in San Diego, have been gone nearly 30 years now.

Greeting fellow lovers of the soil! My name is Megan and I'm currently a student. My husband and I moved to the Denver metro area in August of 2012 from central Oklahoma. We had a less than successful container garden going on our spacious porch for our first year gardening there. We now live technically in Denver, but a stone's throw from Cherry Creek Reservoir. I grew up in a very rural town with a population of around 1,000 people, so living in the city has been a major change for me especially. I am very much a country girl. My husband, on the other hand, has lived in smaller cities most of his life, and even lived in Honolulu for many years. We both long to escape the city life together one day, but that will have to wait for now. Growing up, my dad and his wife had a hog and horse farm and they also had a decent sized garden. I remember the joys of wandering the garden wide eyed and curious. My farm experience was short lived however, but was the sort of experience that stays with a person for life. It is where my connection with and love of nature began. I would love to work at a garden center eventually, but am not sure if I would be hired due to lack of experience. That said, I'd also love to take horticulture classes if there were any closer to me. For now I have just been doing my own horticulture research in my spare time until I can attend formal classes for it. As for my gardening space, it is minimal currently. We have moved into a nice apartment with a balcony, so that is what we got. Due to this fact, I am always looking for new ideas for vertical gardening. I'm mostly growing in plastic pots, 5 and 3 gallon buckets, crates, coffee cans, and basically whatever I can get my hands on that fits on the balcony lol. This is really only my second season growing anything, so yes, I'm a newb. But we all have to start somewhere.

I have spent a great deal of time Googling and reading through Hummels books. In fact, that's where I read about Berta Hummels early sketches that indeed were NOT of children, but of older men and women. There is a Hummel #181 named Old Man Reading Newspaper. This piece was made as a sample only and was not approved by the Siessen Convent for production since it was not considered typical of her work. It is an exact reproduction of one on Sister M.I. Hummel's early sketches. It was listed as a closed number on Feb 18 1948. This is in the Robert L. Miller collection. Some of the other Hummels like this are Hummel #189 Old Woman Knitting, Hummel #190 Old Woman Walking To Market and Hummel #191 Old Man Walking To Market. Again these pieces were made as Samples only and were not approved by the Siessen Convent for production since it was not considered typical of her work. They are exact reproductions of some of Sister M.I. Hummel's early sketches. There is also another Hummel made and considered for production, but never approved. It is of a girl standing with a dog in her arms. It was sculpted by Arthur Moeller in 1943. This sample also does not have the M.I. Hummel siganture. This is Hummel #158(CN) Listed as closed Number on Sept 17 1943. This information was taken out of Price Guide to M.I. Hummel Figurines, Plates and More by Robert L. Miller. I found a link to this very book online below. Unfortunately no picture so you can see for yourself these figurines were not of children. So that information is to the contrary of what texasredhead has found. Maybe she should have done more Googling. Again I wasn't saying this piece was a Hummel. Only that is was from someone that collected Hummels, having 97 figurines and several plates and bells, and giving reference of the history of the piece the best we know. I was only trying to find out if anyone recognized this type of figurine or knew who it was made by. Thank you Lindac for the links. I'm sorry I can not answer your question, but wanted to share an anecdote about salvaging flooded equipment. In the late 1960s the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, CA, was building a nuclear submarine - the USS Guitarro - when it inadvertently sank along side the pier. All of the electronics and machinery were completely immersed in sea water. It was held that the crew had no responsibility and the shipyard was totally responsible for the disaster. The Guitarro was raised and equipments removed and either refurbished or replaced and the Guitarro ultimately went to sea as an operational boat. Fast forward 5 years and the Guitarro was sent to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA, for a complete overhaul or refurbishment. I was the Senior Repair Superintendent on that overhaul. Many of the yard workers referred to me as the Repair Superintendent that did NOT sink the Guitarro. (Comparing me to the poor guy that had been responsible five years earlier at a different shipyard.) In any event, best of luck in salvaging your mother-in-law's furnace! The best WW II novels I know are by Alan Furst, all the protagonists are unimportant people caught up in the war--usually getting involved with spying in some way or other. The recreation of the period is phenomenal, and the characters compelling, though they might be a trifle too sophisticated for teens. For adults, I also recommend two memoirs, now pretty much forgotten. I ran across reference to them in some other book I was reading a few years ago. One is called The Walls Came Tumbling Down and is by a Dutch woman who was imprisoned as a political prisoner. When the Germans fled the prison camp, she and several friends had to figure out how to get home. Very interesting. The other is Three Came Back (I hope I have the name right.) An American woman, her husband and very small son are trapped in southeast Asia when the war breaks out and survive the war in a Japanese internment camp. Also very good.

My grandma told me they had to cover all the window panes with oil paper so that lights from houses were not visible at night. She and her friend were walking home from a party one night, got stopped by a man posing as MP (maybe he really was, who knows?), and they just ran home as fast as they could.

Rain, thanks so much for your input here! I really appreciate your time and effort. I had completely forgotten about the songs that were so popular and the "big band" sounds. When we talk about war, it usually is a sad thing & we want to forget, but there were good times too!
