I have two 4' tall chaste trees. one I am growing as a single trunk and the other is a double trunk. They had just begun to leaf out the week prior to the late freeze, and even though I covered them their baby leaves still turned soft, black and dry. I crushed those dry leaves while trying to be careful not to hurt any buds that might releaf. It has been about 10 days of warm weather since, and I do not see any any new growth. But people have posted that we should wait 4 to 6 weeks, then do a scratch test to see if any branches or trunks have green color just under the brown or gray bark. I sure hope my Chase trees both survive. I also have a redbud tree. a very young only 1 foot tall smoke tree. and a Blue Satin hardy hibiscus tree, which I am waiting to see if they releaf again. My young ogon 'Gold Rush' dawn redwood did not drop its leaves, but they did get crispy and the tree is still stuggling to regain its spring leaf color. It will give me such joy to see all those young trees recover. At least my young perrotia persica (Sp?) came through without much damage, so did my young three trunked paperbark maple. At first I thought that we were supposed to remove the dead leaves which did not fall off by themselves, but now the current thought is to leave those dry leaves alone, so that we do not damage the buds which should releaf. Of course that advice came to late for me. I already removed my tree's dead leaves, but hopefully my effort to do it an a way which would not damage new buds worked. I guess I just have to wait and see.

Do you see shriveled up buds either on the plant or on the ground? Regardless, maybe the wilting everyday does do something to the plant. I am no brugmansia professional, but I am a horticulturist. Stressed plants do sometimes not flower. Personally, I suggest giving them a spot where they get morning sun, and afternoon shade or filtered sun, to keep cool in the heat of the day. Are they still root bound? If they are too root bound, they might also not be getting enough water to promote buds & blooming. This may also be part of the reason for the wilting in the heat. Lastly, have you tried taking a cutting and starting a new plant? I have 2 large brugmansia every year. But every fall, I completely chop them down into 6" pieces, and then throw the plants out. I root the cuttings over the winter, pot up in the spring, and have 6' plants loaded with flowers from July-October. Then I start the process over again....

I'll have to take another pic of the last one. It has round red and black berries. I was outside with Mercedes when I took those because she was restless and kept wanting to go outside so I took the camera and we went out for a while. I wish I had known what was going to happen I would have taken a last pic of her but its better to remember her when she was well. Yes she was old and her heart gave out. She has been on heart meds for a a few months and the vet didn't tell me that it would only work for a little while. He wasn't surprised when I called him at 2:30 this morning and said to just let her go there was nothing more to be done for her. Enough about the sad part. The red plumie smells just like deep red roses. The really big brug in the bed out back is Naughty Nick. He lost all his buds when it got hot again. No Karyn, the new leaves look funky on the Daydreams but the others that got burned look ok now that they lost the affected leaves. Do you think I should destroy the Daydreams? I am now worried it might be a virus.

I don't think they're thrips cause I didn't see any insects on the plant. Here's an image of the yellowing I'm talking about. 1 leaf seems to get the bulk of it. It turns competely to a straw like appearance and texture. The other leaves I've noticed are also starting. It seems to start at the tips. I have a rectangular box dedicated to tulips and for the past couple years now, they grow crooked, leaves yellow and streak, the pedals ruffle and streak as well.. I thought it was tulip fire but the fungicide I tried didn't change anything. Kind of wondering if it had to do with not fertilizing cause, being a novice, it's only just this year that I realized I need to fertilize! And only just this year that I've started..
