Resource for agave victoriae-reginae?

I am looking to add an agave victoriae-reginae to my collection, but I am having trouble finding a resource to purchase on online. Any assistance would be appreciated!

I have been slowly collecting agave for my container garden on my deck. The pots are taken into my unheated garage for the winter.

It is a relatively common species. There are about a dozen for sale on eBay right now, and with a little bit of Googling, I'm sure you can find a specialty seller with nice size plants at a very reasonable price.

It really is a beautiful species, and is very well suited for container gardening. Totally worth the effort and cost!

A rather impressive specimen at the Huntington Gardens. About a year after I took this picture, the plant bloomed, and subsequently died. And so it goes...

joscience, your plant is so beautiful! ebay was a great tip. i got a decent sized pup for $10 including shipping! isn't ebay great ;o)
can't wait to add this one to my collection!

Ah! I did not know that! Guess I'll see what happens in the future with complete withholding of winter water. I had noticed last year that without watering I start to see some leaf crinkling so started giving it sips. As you may guess, Mara, getting it "out of pots as quick as possible" will never happen in my clime unless I want an 'agave-cicle'. The media is quite well draining. Little chunks of bark -- like the few you can see on the surface (and in about that same ratio throughout) are the only organic matter in the media. In fact, what you see on the surface is not top dressing for looks but rather the actual media used. Despite its diminutive size (plant is only about 4" across) there are quite a few pups at its base (and have been for a couple years now). Having heard that this is a very slow growing plant, I had not expected the pupping at such a small size. Unfortunately, the pups having made their appearance have since pretty much just hit the "pause" button growth-wise.

I have seen a yellow marginated Queen Vic on ebay, I got a small pup from a seller naned rick3321. He does have his own web site called Natures Curiosity Shop, link below. He specializes in variegated succulents and if anyone has this plant he would. Ive never seen an alba before though (so if you find one please let us know where). If you lived in my area, southern California, I would tell you not to worry even though we too get hot (115F this year), but MOST of the time it is not that hot here, plus we have more crap in the air which helps protect agaves. Few agaves need sun protection here. That one is definitely a full-sun plant here... even the white varietated forms of Agave victoriae-regina do fine in full sun here. But in your area where it gets really hot, and stays hot, and the air is clear, you really need to keep plants like that in morning sun only. In fact, I understand the number of Agaves that can tolerate full sun where you live is a smaller one than the list that cannot. Your plant will recover fine as long as you move it, or be sure it only gets partial sun.. no sun after noon until about 5pm. The variegation will not go away

I wish I could claim any responsibility for the appearnce of my plant. In reality, this is a total "set it and forget it" plant. It gets lots of sun and water when I remember. Otherwise, it does its thing all on its own!

eBay is probably the best, and worst thing to have happened to this hobby. It really opened things up, making it more approachable to the general public. Instead of mail order, text only plants lists, you can now do searches, see pictures, and have the plant ordered in less than five minutes! It has also served to make the hard to find stuff a little less hard to find.

On the other hand, it has done a great deal of damage to popular taxonomy. There is little regard for scientific names, with borderline useless common names being much preferred. Worse, eBay sellers will use *any* name for a plant if they think it will increase their page hits or sells. Now everything is a Jade!!! or caudex!!!! or bonsai!!! or lest we forget RARE!!!!!!!!!!.

Beyond that, and consider this a warning, it can do some serious damage to your bank account!!!

By the way, $10 with shipping included is a terrific deal!

I hate eBay and stopped giving plants or seeds to anybody who is offering them on ebay just to make fast money out of them.

jordi - i would agree with joscience. for the novice gardener ebay offers inexpensive plants for people to experiment with. of course more experienced gardeners have the knowledge to avoid ebay and purchase from qualified nurseries. but you have to admit, when you're first starting out and you don't know what you're doing it's a lot less painful to kill a plant that cost you $10 as opposed to one that cost $25+. and if you are successful you can learn more about a specific species and begin buying higher quality plants. everyone has to start somewhere!

side note - today i also bought an agave from high country gardens. i would have gotten agave VR from them if they had offered it.

As a new eBayer, I love it and have been spending much too much money over the last few weeks. *g* There'll be a picture post once I've received a few more plants, but since I started, I've won or bought a couple of dioscoreas, a Fockea edulis, several rhipsalis and "stemmy" senecios, one small Pachypodium namaquanum, and some dorstenia seeds. They weren't always cheap, but most of them I'd never have access to otherwise.

So, yeah, love the eBay.

I LOVE Ebay..Yesterday, I spent 9+ hours browsing various plants there..
I swear, bidding is like gambling..you see and want a plant, make a bid, 3 mins later you're outbid..you think, do I want to rebid? How bad do I want 'x' plant..Okay, I want it, so up the bid..Again you're outbid..Rebid again. You find yourself counting hours, minutes and seconds..
Don't you just love when there's 20 seconds left, and someone outbids you by .25???? You find youself pounding the keyboard, hoping to outbid them? lolol.

Ebay should have Warnings like cigarette packs. Bidding or Buy Now is Addictive..Can by harmful to your pocketbook..lol It truly is.

Kpev, did you try Ebay? Here's a list of C&S nurseries. Plant Delights, Miles to Go, Grisby Cactus, Arid Lands Green house, Cactus Jax, Go Succulents..I don't know if the last two nurseries sell agaves, but they specialize in C&S's...Toni
