Badly sunburned variegated Agave victoriae-reginae

I picked up these two plants a few weeks ago, and put them in the ground where they get sun til about 2 PM. After being out of town for several weeks and therefore unable to keep a close eye on them, here's how they look. This damage occurred under three layers of cheesecloth, which I had planned to remove one layer per month then let the plants fare on their own.

Plant 1:

Plant 2:

I know I probably deserve to be tarred and feathered for this cruelty, but please go easy on me!

So, a couple questions for the experienced folks:

- Will these ever toughen up and survive?

- If they survive, can I expect them to lose their variegation? It seems to be very subtle on the newest leaves.

I'm thinking I'll just dig them up and grow them in pots on the porch in full but bright shade. Any thoughts?

Oh, and yes I know about the fungus spots :)
