Guzmania with brown leaves - help!

heidigr1

I have a Guzmania pup that I saved from the mother about 2 years ago. Since then it's been growing well in a container of bark chips and has a good root base. It hasn't put out a new flower, but it keeps growing new green leaves.

However, recently the leaves on the bottom started turning brown all over and are dying. It first started showing some brown at the tips so I thought it was getting too much light (it was indoors under a 60 watt bulb). So I moved it to a semi-shady place and that's when things really started going downhill.

The leaves don't appear to be soggy and they don't pull away easily from the base. However, when I look at the base of the leaves some of them have a mildew-colored staining. It doesn't brush off easily. I usually water it about every 2-3 weeks, when I notice the cup is dry. A few times this summer it's gotten some Miracle Gro. I don't notice any obvious signs of pestilence.

Any thoughts on how I can save this plant?

Thank you!
