Not yet, John, I'll keep you posted. The flowers themselves should be normal-looking, but if any of the sepals are chimeric, that could make things interesting as far as the next generation.

I wouldn't discount anything with this plant yet. It may well be a new form of variegation. I hope it is seed fertile. I've heard that the pollen sometimes will not carry the trait over. Do you have any siblings?

It's a chimera, which is what variegation is too, so in that sense it could act the same way, and transmit the same way, which is what I want to test out.

Many Lambert's Pride crosses will occasionally get narrow stripes of differently-patterned tissue, as shown in pics 2 and 3 above, but never have I seen one chimeric to this degree.

I've had Ring of Fire for years and up until now it has been normal and productive. I didn't keep any of its siblings, but I know who has some. Why do you ask?

I have seen that once before in the foliage, but not as good as that. I've also seen it in some photos.

You sould probably do some sibling crosses, and self pollinations. If the siblings have the same trait hidden the resulting offspring should show it. Selfing will often intensify a trait in the next generation. I will self Daylily seedling blooms when I see something I like, it will usually come out stronger in the next generation. Sibling crosses do the same thing. Back crosses can also be a good tool, you still have clones from the original parent plants.

The problem with using unrelated stock in these kind of project is they lack the genes you need, unless its a dominant gene, which this probably isn't or we would see more plants like that. If you only use unrelated stock, your chances of sucess are probably not very good.

I learned a lot about genetics from the late Dr. Joanne Norton, who was a geneticist, I think she worked in agriculture industry, but we shared a love of Tropical fish, and Daylilys. She worked with both, her work in Angelfish genetics was and is still ahead of its time. She raised and introduced Daylilys, and probably understood their genetics better than anyone.

Its either something rescessive you've unleashed, or some new genetic break. You probably produce enough seed, and grow enough plants to tip the odds of something new in your favor.

There is the possibility that (and I know you don't use them much if any) some kind of chemical brought that on. I have read about people using some herbicides to alter plants genetics. There is even someone using microwave ovens to change Hostas genes, with some interesting results. They actually micro wave seed.

You keep refering to it as a chimera, why? I know what they are, but what leads you to believe it is one? The pattern looks pretty stable.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say it looks stable, John. It looks wildly UNstable to me! The irregular patterning is very much like that of an unstable variegate.

Just to make sure we're both on the same page, this pup is a sport. I say it's a chimera because there are 2 distinct pattern forms going on side by side. Unfortunately, none of the pictures shows it well. It was shaded out so the "normal" tissue looks green in the first photos, instead of banded, which is its usual patterning. It has reddened up considerably in the last photos so you can only see the dividing line clearly in a couple of places. Basically, though, one portion of the leaf is banded while the other is marmorated. The mother plant was not doing that, nor have any other offsets over the years I've been growing it-- at least not to that extent.

As I say, it does get the occasional stripe, which seems to be a characteristic of a lot of LP hybrids, so to that extent I can see where a tendency in that direction could be genetic and possibly intensified by the type of breeding you suggest. I haven't been looking at it that way, though. I've done a number of LP hybrids, as well as crossing one LP hybrid to another, and never gotten anything like this. That doesn't mean it can't happen, but it could be a long process. On the other hand, if my assumptions about its chimerism are correct, this individual plant could act as a transmitter of the trait, in a way that a normal Ring of Fire wouldn't, and it wouldn't make any difference what I crossed it to (except in terms of the overall attractiveness of the resultant hybrids). It's just a question of picking the right flower(s) to pollinate. It's more a "mechanical" process than a genetic one, in my opinion, but until I can test it out, that's just a theory.

By stable I mean the color is set. It will be interesting to see if the pups show the same coloration.

I have a Daylily that was converted from Diploid 22 chromosomes to Tetraploid 44 chromsomes using an extract from a Crocus. For the first few years it was a functional Tetraploid, but all of a sudden reverted back to being a Diploid, a "chimera", it kept some of the enhanced qualities the Tetraploid had, the larger flower, bigger edge etc, but is now a Diploid again.

I would explore the genetic aspect, self a couple of flowers. You just might also want to try pollen from some Variegated plants as well.

Its just too bad it takes so long to see results.

For those of you who wanted to see the flowers, here they are. The petals are normal, as expected, but it's realy hard to see the sepals themselves. What you're seeing is the floral bracts, which show the 2 tissue types quite clearly.

I tried several times to get a close-up of the sepals on the two flowers that appear to be on the dividing line, but they're so deep in the cup that I couldn't get a decent side shot. Also light and focusing difficulties (I'm still learning how to use my camera, folks!) If I were to pull one out and lay it on the table I could see what was going on, but that would kind of defeat the whole purpose!

I did manage to get a pic of one on the "white" side, and you can see that the sepals are marmorated, as are the ones on the "red" side, it's just that it's a lighter pattern overall, as in the leaves. Anyway, I guess I'll just pollinate all of the ones along the apparent dividing line and see what happens!

Who was the lucky father?

I should be able to tell in a little over a year if any of the offspring share this trait, Mike, unless it's something that only comes on in adulthood, which seems unlikely.

I just wish I had something decent to pollinate it with, though. I'll probably hedge my bets by trying several different things in hopes that one of them makes a nice cross, but there just aren't any obvious paternal candidates blooming right now, and I'm not even clear in my own mind what type of pollen parent would best bring out the two-tone split.

The issue for me is which side am I crossing to? If I were crossing to a straight marmorated plant I'd try to figure out what aspects were lacking in that and find a daddy that could potentially supply that. With a banded plant I would probably try to further bring out the banding. I've got both going on here. It makes more sense to focus on the banded side, because if it looses that then the 2 halves will look pretty similar. Ring of Fire was the only banded cv. out of the grex; its siblings were all marmorated, so it's as if it wants to revert, and I don't want it to do that.

It's not a selfer and there are no other Lambert's Pride hybrids in bloom that might contribute to its genetic tendency to stripe like this. I initially rejected Blushing Tiger even though it's banded, because zonation is a different kind of banding and the two don't usually combine. I got to thinking about it though, and I talked myself into trying it! It won't surprise me if the result is a muddy mess, so I need to find another candidate.

Lisa, if the floral brachts are striated/bicoloured, is that not most likely that the sepals will also be the same? Or is it not necessarily the case?

I would think so, Japie, but these eyes can't see it to prove it. I can see that they are darker on one side of the plant than the other, so I'm just going to operate on the assumption that the sepals will reflect their surrounding floral bracts at least somewhat, although it may not be an exact match.
