I am waiting on my granite guy to call me and while perusing all the granite edge links I saw what they are referring to as a laminated radius over radius. See link below, halfway down under custom edges on the right side top row. It looks to my untrained eye that it will hide the laminated seam and look deliberate? Is there another name for that edge? Is that a hard edge to create, I had picked a bullnose and this almost looks like a flipped over bullnose bottom piece? Recap I have to have a laminate edge to hide the plywood sub-top. Stuff I put on top of the soil invariably makes it's way INTO the soil because I have lots of busy and voracious worms. I have watched a leaf being dragged under the surface in a matter of moments. And the mere act of harvesting turns the soil as vigorously as digging a trench. Unless we are talking about the actual spade using, the 'on top or underneath' distinction is no way clear-cut. My only real concern is to ensure the surface oi my sandy soil is not exposed to the leaching winds and rain...and a winter coverage of weeds is at least as useful and effective as any other mulch...just looks a bit tatty. There is a big difference in how I garden for paying customers and how I conduct myself on my own plot. I know which method I prefer On one hand, I am responsible, careful, pay attention to the science of horticulture and am often slightly anxious. On the other, it is all a lot more anarchic, experimental (and often murderous), still slightly anxious but always joyful sense of 'so what'. Horses for courses. I had been happily posting on the ARF forum for 15 years or so when the issue of soil amendments came up. One experienced gardener filled the planting holes with bushels of hay...and would not even entertain the idea that this was not the solution she imagined. And we hadn't even got started on the thorny issue of cutting back(or not) after transplanting. I ended up being sent to disney and felt really dismayed about the whole argumentative situation because of gardening practices. Now I am older and a tiny bit more circumspect, I just don't get so exercised by how other people do things so much...and I certainly wouldn't fall out with anyone because they got a bit secateur-happy.

Kate: From what I gather here the Azaleas seem to be the most cold sensitive. I presume it's because they are setting buds now or even flowering. We have a big park in Muskogee (of Okie from Muskogee song fame) dedicated to Azaleas and we hear about the freeze damage to them every year it seems. From the reports on this forum they seem to be the most sensitive to damage. Is it bud damage or the flowers only? We don't grow them around here due to our heavy Alkaline soil, so I don't know if they are in flower here or not...........Debra: That's interesting about the raised bed daylilies. Did you get all your pots inside? We all have a pot ghetto of some sort don't we-I've just taken it one step further-lol......It did get down to 24 last night, so I took a stroll to see if there was any damage out there. Some of my blooms on Tete e Tete daffodil were nipped, but the Ipheon flowers seemed fine. The foliage on my Lycoris Radiata (red spider lilies) was almost all killed back over winter, so flowering may be sparse this fall. The daylily foliage on those daylilies that were left outside seem to be fine. The night temperatures are going up the rest of the week, so I guess I will have to haul my pots back out of the garage. I bought a wonderful wagon from AM Leonard last year and it has been a godsend for hauling pots full of daylilies around. Much better then a wheel barrow. I highly recommend getting one if you have a need to haul pots................Maryl
