Is there a better, or more useful plant to grow in the garden?
I just finished cleaning about a thousand fresh (September) Chive seeds, which brought them to mind. I have about a dozen patches of them growing in various parts of the garden, and I let one small clump go to seed, just to see what I'd get from growing them out.
This must be one of the best perennial herbs you can grow.
They eat great.
The multiply on their own.
They drive off nasty bugs which like to eat other herbs and veggies.
In my climate, the are available all year long.
They taste like Onion.
They taste like Garlic.
Did I mention they eat great? Raw in salads. In stirfry. In meat dishes. In egg dishes. In veggie dishes.
Plant them once, and you have them forever. Divide the clumps in spring, and you can stick them anywhere in the garden, from full sun to part shade.
Cut them down, and they grow back.
They don't need ferts.
They're drought tolerant.
They bloom nicely and attract bees and butterflies to their flowers. Plain old Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) blooms purple, and Garlic Chives (Allium tuberosum) blooms white.
Live in the bitter north? Take a 2" cookie cutter and cut out a plug of their bulbs. Stick them in a 6" pot with some regular potting mix, and park the pot in a sunny window, and you'll have fresh Chives all winter. Plant them back out in the spring, and they'll keep on keeping on.
They have to be one of the best of plants.
