Yes, you can WS roses, but you need to remove the seeds from the hips. You can cut them open, though striking gently with a kitchen mallet may do just as well to split them, then pry out the rose seeds--there may be few or many. Rose seeds are irregularly shaped and grey to tan in color.

I read up lots about roses from seed and harvested hips from about six different varieties a few years ago. I tried summer, winter, and spring sowing and I had no success whatever. Perhaps like Don, you will have success in your zone. The only way I've managed to propogate roses is by rooting cuttings, which was suprisingly easy. You may want to try both methods.

thanks, my usual way of progating roses is to take a long stem and lay it on the ground with a rock or a brick, by the end of the year I have another rose bush. I do this with forsynthias too. But it is a slow process.
Can one WS hardwood cutting from blueberry bushes or currant bushes?

I've had WS rose seeds germinate-they were real slow though. Out of a baggie of seeds might have had 5 that came up.
Roses are hussies though, you probably won't know who the daddy is!

My Rosa Glauca reseeds every year so they can definitely be winter sown.

I remember a few years back - I think it was Drippy - someone who winter sowed a bunch opf other types and met with great success.
