I will be going to see my Mom this weekend and bring my daughter back with me for spring break. Mom is in the hospital again with her heart. They are talking about putting in a kind of pace maker that slows her heart down to a normal rythm when she goes into Atrial fibrilation since it is happening so often. If I do ok with this trip when its time for my daughter to go back I may take her all the way instead of meeting half way and stay for a week or so to spend more time with my Mom. I am gong to try to drive the whole trip down there and see if I can make it but hubby will be with me in case its too much for me then I will know if I can do it or not. I haven't been home in 2 years because the last time I went it hurt me so bad I had to stay in bed and go to the chiropractor and the doctor and stay 3 weeks til I could get back home so I have been scared to go again by myself. I hope I can do this so I can go home more often to see her. Its hard for me and John to both be away from the shop since we have to close down to be away. We are leaving Friday and if all is ok with Mom have to come back Sunday so we can work Monday. Please keep her in your prayers once again. Going to take a few brugs down to my sisters and get them hooked, lol. Its perfect for growing them in Baton Rouge. I will take them some of the easier ones that grow fast.

Sorry to hear about your mom! Give her my best & you make sure & take EXTRA care of yourself on the way there! Thankfully John is going with you! You really don't need to end up in the hospital again!

I agree, leave the lights off and just keep the plants in the window. When they are shipped they get no light at all for several days, so they can handle reduced light for a couple days while you are gone. Leaving the lights on too long would throw off their photoperiod and any temeperates would have trouble determining when to go dormant.

Tell your friend to go to the Laundry Room. You can find it here at the Garden Web under Home Forums. If you think people here get into heated arguments about hostas- you ain't seen nothing yet! Caliloo (Alexa) told me about it once. You can learn about anything laundry as well as whether top loaders are better than front loaders. There was an ongoing argument about the merits of both. My plumaria expert says that blossom booster or anything with such a high middle number is useless. In fact some of the threads by Al will agree. I use "Dynamite" 13 13 13...Even numbers right across the board. In fact most plants don't like such a high middle number, because your throwing the abilty off for the whole plant to be healthy, even the colors of the leaves by forcing flowers on your plants when you don't have to. How come plumies flower from the ground outdoors withou someone throwing so much middle number on them? In the ground, they are getting an even amount of nutriets to sustain over look, vigour, and health. I will send you an excert of why the middle number is useless. The "dynamite" has worked wonders for me. It is slow release along with micro nutrients and a well balanced fert. Just some excerts... "Whatever nutrients are available in excess, will be absorbed by the plant to a certain degree, and in some cases, this may lead to toxicity or even symptoms of shortages of other nutrients as toxicity levels block a plant's ability to take up other nutrients. Too much nitrogen will lead to excessive foliage production and less flowering. Too much potassium or phosphorus will not lead to ill effect, but will show up as a deficiency of other nutrients as it blocks uptake". "What about the "Bloom Booster" fertilizers you might ask? To induce more prolific flowering, a reduced N supply will have more and better effect than the high P bloom formulas. When N is reduced, it slows vegetative growth without reducing photosynthesis. Since vegetative growth is limited by a lack of N, and the photosynthetic machinery continues to turn out food, it leaves an expendable surplus for the plant to spend on flowers and fruit". "The fact that different species of plants grow in different types of soil where they are naturally found, does not mean that one needs more of a certain nutrient than the other. It just means that the plants have developed strategies to adapt to certain conditions, like excesses and deficiencies of particular nutrients.." "Most greenhouse operations will follow pretty closely to a 2-1-2 ratio of the primary macro-nutrients on most greenhouse crops with minor deviations based on tissue analysis and the effect of the growing medium. Most post-greenhouse fertilization will follow fairly closely to a 3-1-2 ratio, with some deviation. Again, this very closely mimics the range of the primary macros found in plant tissues". Or, I could just leave them in their current containers all in their under-the-bed rubbermaid container out on the outside table in the sun, water them well before leaving I would leave them as is in their tray and rig up a water wicking set-up into the tray. Water wick can be made from several things - an old towel, coils of cotton clothes line, even disposable diapers, etc. They make specific mats for water wicking for plants if you have time to get some from a local nursery and it works best. We use it in the greenhouse all the time. Just Google 'capillary matting' for pics. Then plant when you get home. The stress of transplanting would be enough for them to cope with without adding inattention or neglect or the well-intentioned neighbor to the mix. Dave

Thanks everyone. I will be helping move her back in with my sister while I'm there. She is not able to go up and down the stairs in her apartment anymore. I wish she would move here with me where its nice and peaceful but she doesn't want to be so far from the grandkids which I don't blame her. I just wanted everyone to know where I'll be in case I can't steal anyones signal with the wireless laptop, lol.

Kristy, sorry your mom is having health problems, and pray those will soon be in the past. As for you, please take it easy on the road and stop every so often so you won't be sitting for very long periods. And thank you for letting us know your whereabouts, that way we won't have to send out an alert of MIA, lol!

After talking to her tonight I really want to go now. She is going to have to have help the rest of the week so my sister is going to have to take off work and she is barely surviving now and Mom is having to move in with her. I feel really guilty that I can't do more. I can help money wise but not being close enough to help with other things is driving me crazy. My sisters fridge went out today and Mom is moving in on Friday if she is out of the hospital. I found a nice used one on craigslist in her town and was able to pay for it with paypal. The weird thing is he lives in Mississippi and had to put his mother in law in the nursing home and she has all this brand new house full of furniture and appliance that are only 8 months old that they are getting rid of and are wealthy and don't need it so they aren't being picky about the prices. It was strange I found him on the internet and neither of us lives in Louisiana and both going to help our Moms there this weekend. What a blessing. Now I dont have to haul so much stuff from here. I can just send my sister to check it out and get what they need and pay him for it online. I told her if there was anything else they needed to get it and they can sell their older stuff for what they can get for it and I will pay the difference so they can be a little more comfortable at least. I hope he has a good bed. My Mom really needs another one. We all pitched in and got her one last year but the one she wanted was out of stock and she settled for something cheaper and used the rest of the money on other things she needed and has never been happy with it. I spent the day getting new tires for the truck and working but had my mind on how I was going to carry everthing down there. She wants books which I have a ton of and all my sisters want plants and my daughter is just happy to see me. She is a blessing too. My sisters are so excited about the brugs, lol. I will take them each different kinds so they can swap cuttings when they get bigger. I really need to take off work one day this week and get everything ready but I can't. I need to sell a car before I leave to try and get some extra money to help them with the moving and expenses. Wish me luck. I will be a cleaning waxing machine tomorrow, lol. Thank you all for your prayers it means a lot to me and my family.

Take your time! Drive with care & let John do a little of the driving! :) You both will need plenty of rest along the way & once you've arrived. Hope things work out well for you & your family. Take care & I (as well as others here) will be thinking of all of you. Be safe! :)

Thanks Mike. I just got off the phone with my Mom and she was crying. They told her she has developed diabetes as well as her heart condition and they are keeping her in the hospital. She is a southern girl and loves her fattening food and sweets and the thought of having to not eat what she wants the rest of her life has her very upset. All of you keep praying that it was just brought on by all the stress and new medications and they will get it straight. She is terrible about watching her diet.

I hope you have a safe trip. Sorry to hear your mom isn't doing well but at least if they figure all what is wrong with her, maybe they can get it all straighted out faster. Take care driving and enjoy being with your family, everything else will wait! I can't blame your mom tho I *love* cajun food, damn now I'm thinking about *that* again LOL!

Wish I could send you some. It should be crawfish season, lol. That would be like telling John he can't eat rice. He eats it 3 times a day and thinks he would die without it, lol. Poor Mom. If this new medication doesn't work for her heart they are going to put in a type of pacemaker that will slow her heart rate back to normal.

Oh hush lol!!! Sooo not fair! I remember the first time we celebrated Easter in Louisiana, I went to the supermarket looking for hams on sale and there was none anywhere...and I was like, what the he**? But there were mudbugs everywhere for sale fresh off the truck. My husband was saying, "no way am I eating crawdads for Easter!!" Well after about a year there we were eating crawdads, alligator and everything else and lovin it!
