Free cactus tree in National City!

(I hope this is ok for me to post here...)

For everyone here who lives in the San Diego area, I just happened to find this on Craigslist:

The posting looks like it was just put up today (Thur 2/16); I can't tell from the photo, but it looks like it might be some kind of Euphorbia (?)... I'm probably totally wrong.

I doubt I'll be able to get out that way any time soon to be able to take this individual up on his/her offer, but I thought some of you here might have the opportunity.

(If I somehow am able to get out that way in the next few days, and there's anyone here who'd like some but doesn't live close enough to go get some, I can see about getting enough to send your way. That's a great big if, of course - it all depends on if I'm able to get out there, and if there's any of the plant left.)

Sure hope some of you can get down there and take home some of that gorgeous-looking cactus!

Oh no, not more angst that a Euphorbia isn't a cactus - once a day is enough, ain't that so? Since you've ID'd it I think we've avoided another one.

That's awfully generous, Jessica, but if you remember, those are by no means uncommon there - and if it were a cactus, the same holds true - not uncommon, but not quite a dime a dozen, more like a quarter.

I sure hope someone takes it, because it will save a trip to the dump. I've done that before, and deconstructing a Euphorb of that size is no fun - a toxic environment if there was ever one, when the very air comes ablaze with the latex vapours (I kid you not) and the outpourings of the precious sap (with apologies to Mark Halperin's A Soldier of the Great War).

Jeff: True, true, they are fairly common - but I don't have one, and I know I'd love to take some of that plant. So I figured I'd offer, in case anyone else here also felt a similar tug and doesn't live close enough to get their hands on it.

I've never actually cut one up, so I hadn't thought about the vapors, etc. But I do have a very plentiful supply of nitrile gloves, and can get ahold of an N-95 mask.

Actually getting to the location would be the trick. I'd have to actually have business in that there part of town for me to make the drive.

But in any case, maybe someone here who also lives there will want some of it. (And possibly also edumicate the property owner on the finer points of telling apart a Euphorbia from an actual cactus. Something I wouldn't have been able to do before joining GW, that's for sure!) :)

As I might have said I do genealogical research, and I've had my genes sequenced btw and jumped on that research early on so I am seeing it unfolding. If you go back to the dawn of humankind, there have always been migrations for at least the last 65K years. Entirely too early to have assigned any particular traits to any particular country. Not only have the groups with similar genetic sequence clusters moved around, and left individuals with the same genetic fingerprints in every place they ever roamed, but their offspring mutated and added new sequences to the mix. It would be a stretch to even think that any particular 'country' hasn't been mixed since antiquity. That is not a new phenomenon. My particular sequencing has been pegged as originating in the Middle East, but is now found most heavily in the area where Europe meets Asia in the far north and in every other population on earth in very small numbers. That's because my maternal line has been 'everywhere' in the last 65K years and given birth to many of the mutations of the 'modern' genetic lines. This is why it's simplistic to say any 'country' anywhere has genetic traits expressed in occupations or skills. Add to that that I am not the expression of just this sequence, but have had untold generations of other lines mixed into the pool with their own unique differences. It supersedes any modern 'country'.

I forgot. I found the best thing for handling cacti (when repotting, planting or trimming) is a pair of ordinary kitchen tongs--the scissor-handled jobs. I got two pairs for a dollar at Dollar Tree a couple of years ago.

As liriodendron said, you may uncover some family secrets when you research your lineage. That's the best part, it's the things they didn't want known that are the most interesting! In my case my father said that there was a secret in his family but he never knew what it was, his mother did but she was gone. Well that's all I had to hear and I was off to the races, I had to find out! What did they deam so bad they didn't want anyone to know??? So I started digging, looking for any clues. I searched a couple generations and found nothing. But the generation prior I found something unusual for this very WASPish clan. Amidst all the Scottish/Irish names I see a woman with a very different maiden name...mediterranian maybe. Was this it? The big secret was that there was an Italian in the family tree??? LOL. I laughed because that would be something this family thought to be shameful (btw, my mother was Italian). It took some doing but I finally tracked down the mystery woman's lineage and that's when I saw it...siblings with Jewish names! That was all it turned out to be, my snobby grandmother who bragged about being a Daughter of the American Revolution was technically speaking, Jewish. I called my father up laughing, "hey Dad, you're technially Jewish! That's your mother's secret". He said, "that's it? that's all?". Here I was looking for a mass murderer and it turned out just to be bigoted grandmother. OY! But wait...there's more. ;-) Years before I got into geneology I was talking to a Jewish gal who says to me, "you're Jewish right?" I said no. "Yes you are" she replies. "no" I repeat. I remember this conversation because of what she said next, "You ARE, you just don't know it!". We laughed. I wish I still knew her because she would have gotten such a kick out of my geneology discovery. Even though I'm only 5% Jewish she could tell it's in there somewhere!

It appears that the item has been deleted or so it states when I click on it. Sounds like a mess to get rid of it.

It is, but it's another reason for the consumption of ______ before _______, so it's all worth it. I don't know the specificity of Jessica's outfit, but a hazmat suit wouldn't be out of place when a group is taking one of these down.

They probably took it down because they didn't want you driving from Tejas.

Perhaps they took it down 'cause it was a post off Craig's List. Not sure that kind of posting is allowed.

Perhaps next just mention what & where it's posted, rather than posting it here?

Well, it could be a liability issue if removing/cutting that plant could cause harm to humans. Posting something like that would be dangerous to people who aren't knowledgeable about that plant.
