Just to make you drool, hee hee hee! ;-)

First the disclaimer: none of these are available yet, but eventually, hopefully......

These are a couple from a cross I made with 'Intermedia Rubra':

Then there's a couple using one of John Arden's hybrids ('Red Chestnut' x 'Sunspot') as a parent. This one I call 'Kona Coffee':

And this one I don't have a name for yet, but I'll have to come up with one 'cause it's a keeper!

And then I had one super grex that gave me all of these and more:

There were actually 8 or 9 really nice clones in that batch, so I was really happy about that. Haven't got names yet because I wanted to have some kind of a connecting theme with ones in the same grex, and I'm just not coming up with anything yet. One of them (I think it's that first glossy one) has a halfway decent flower too, at least for a foliage type. Just a single tall spike, but a fairly glossy dark red. You never expect much flowerwise when you're going for leaf markings, but I still think it can be done. My main goal, though, is to make some that rival the Neos in foliage color.

I just wish Vrieseas weren't so darn slow. Neos and Bills etc. are so much faster that I tend to stick with them because it's just easier, but looking at these now the cogs in my fevered little brain are starting to turn again............ uh oh, look out!

I dont think getting on the list is a problem, hwever getting them to your area is, could take years
Lisa beautifil plants but to slow growing for me. I have several that look like yours from Shigii.

Ahhhhhhh! TUVAK > ALL! I can't believe you responded to my request and then it took me like a week to place my offerings on the great dane alter. I'm so glad Denise and Kelly were able to identify the kitty door, because I was totally stumped by that picture! Too sad that he was adopted by a family that had clearly not done their research. Any info page on dog breeds will provide advice on what climates they are best suited for, so that's just pure lazy lazy LAZY! Too cool that the breeder yanked him from the home, though. I am so jealous that Bones watches TV. I want my cat to do this SO BAD (for some crazy reason) but he will not! I think he might be passive aggressively passing judgement on my programs. You know, I kind of think you and Lilly match. Sounds crazy, I know, but check out how you have the same expression here as she has here. Coincidence? I think not. As for the crushed flowers, cats are basically like beautiful people. They know they can do whatever they want and get away with it. Although, of course, if I went out tomorrow morning and found a model sleeping in my flowerpot, s/he might not get off as easily as Bones did. Then again, I don't know, maybe I would just take some pictures and post them on the internet.

What a wonderfully thought out house. I like that the guest room can accommodate a health aide, in the future. Something like that can extend the amount of time one can maintain some form of relative independence in one's own home. We're also building an empty-nester house & we could have reduced the footprint of the house by putting all of the "guest" bedrooms in the lower level (unfinished, for now). However, we chose to generously size the room and include an en suite bath so that whoever may need to stay there for a more extended period than the occasional guest would be comfortable. Even if we don't have a health aide, there may come a time when one of us needs extra equipment (hospital type bed, oxygen, etc.) so it will be nice if the other can rest more comfortably in another room while still being within calling distance. Tell your kiddos, "Well done!" You have every right to be proud and thank you for sharing. Jo Ann

There is a lamp shop that we use a lot; it's in Austin. They have rewired lamps for me, made things into lamps, and made custom shades for me. I consider the prices astonishingly reasonable. I bet there are some lamp shops within striking distance from you. Usually they have samples of their work out, either for sale or waiting to be picked up by owners.

Kim, there isn't really even one good word for sunset, and I think "napo'o 'ana o ka la" is a bit of a mouthful for most people. Besides, they're more pink and purple than red or orange. Shiigi did a cross called 'Hawaiian Sunset', which is the other half of that really red one I made with the Arden cross. I was thinking about these today and I decided that if the brown one is 'Kona Coffee', then the red one should be 'Hawaiian Punch' (even though we don't really call it that here, just "fruit punch", but that doesn't quite have the same ring to it).

I want to name a really good one after my husband too, but not one that's part of a series. He's already got my best Cryptanthus, but I'd still like to do one of each of the other genera too. I have a couple of really nice Neos that need a name, but he vetoed them as "too pink". Gotta find something a little more macho I guess.

I've got that last batch all numbered and I keep thinking about just using the Hawaiian numbers as names. There is kind of a unity there since 1 through 9 all start with "E". Somehow I had it in my head that Shiigi had already used one or two of them, but I can't find any record of it, so maybe I'll email him and ask if those are up for grabs. He likes it when I give things Hawaiian names anyway because it helps establish our identity in the plant world. Only thing is they tend to get mangled by mainlanders, but I don't let that stop me! ;-)

As far as "getting on the list"-- well, these guys are about 6 years old now and some of them still haven't even pupped yet, although the ones that have will allow me to put the screwdriver into at least one of their number without panicking too much. I don't release the good stuff until I've got a small population built up, and Michael Kiehl and David Shiigi have both expressed a desire for these, so they are #1 and #2 on the list. So...... I estimate maybe another 5-10 years before Michael will have some to sell, but that's not really that long in dog years!

In the meantime, see if you can track down some of David's crosses, he's way ahead of me. Where did you get yours, diggety? Kim and gonzer can take a drive over to John Arden's. Talk about a candy store!

Yes, John Arden's plants are really amazing--we saw them on the summer conference tour--I never knew vrieseas could look like his! Amazing.

Yes, I've been to Arden's a couple of times and got a good drool going each time! I got some nice ones from him, but of course the ones I really wanted (all the red ones) he wasn't ready to sell. I did make some mental notes on what parents he was using though, so all was not in vain!

BTW, David just emailed and said "go for it!" on the Hawaiian numeric sequence, so I think that's what I'll do with the last batch. Sorry guys, but I'm afraid you're going to have to remember the difference between Ekahi, Elua, Ekolu, Eha, Elima, Eono, Ehiku, Ewalu and Eiwa! I just hope *I* can remember which is which. ;-)
