Solstice Party - What are YOU bringing?

I'm making cheese fondue - grueyre and swiss in cheap chablis (the cheapo stuff tastes best for some reason in this recipe). I have some dry champagne for myself. My daughter is visiting relatives, but my sons will likely be around this evening for fondue.

I was going to do my four containers, but forgot to fish them out of recycling. I have plenty of MG soil, but no containers.

I DID organize my seeds and am putting together a planning spread sheet - just the stuff I love this year and experimenting with Yvonne's salvia and bronze fennel!

What are YOU doing for the solstice?

lol I've a bag of MM's and 3 bucks. xD

I sowed the Amsonia. ^_^ Of course I couldn't wait to do that. A programming friend of mine made me my own personal database software that I'm finding a great use for.

Also sowed: Tennessee purple coneflower, Stella D'oro day lily, Scabiosa, Belamcandas, Black Plum tomatoes Joe Pye Weed and Sweet William. I'm going to sow more I think but I'm taking a break!

Egg Nog - full cream, raw egg, OLD fashioned egg nog!! No Bourbon in this nog only pure unadulterated RUM!!! If I da na fall down on the wee I wi see youze guys inna minnit..........'dis stuf is real good n I might na mak it but 'tis OK cause I planted 3 WS taday.......mmmmmmmmm

Eat food! Comfort food! Here's a cookie recipe and you can find more on line. How about asking guests to bring different solstice cookies? http://www.canvasli.com/awaken/mary_scotts_solstice_cookie_recipes.htm Served with warming winter beverages like egg nog or spiced herbal teas they would be so nice. You might offer the party to be a seed swap too. You could offer "goody bags" of things to winter sow. What fun would it be to get a cut open milk jug to stuff your seeds in - the milk jug could be the "Goody bag" inside you can put the winter sowing directions from wintersown.org that Trudi has posted by DirtySC. You may also want to pop in a baggy full of nice soil for your guests first sowing! Today we had another seed cleaning lesson and swap for the people in my community. I had one a few weeks ago too. They all get directions to winter sow and it seems like we will now have about 20 local winter sowers this year. Depends on a lot of circunstances...I know people who would always do the minimum when a group at work would decide to have a pot luck... But there's no accounting for tastes. I was in charge of a mother, daughter, grand daughter tea as a fundraiser. I asked others in the organization to contribute either cookies, bars or tea sandwiches. I got some wonderful stuff....sandwiches decorated with edible flowers....wonderful tiny tarts....and one woman brought a big bag of those wafer cookies....the kind with white frosting in the middle and they come in white or in pink. I thought what a lazy thing to do!! But all the little girls Looooved them and they were all eaten....while I had other things left over. I have gone to a pot luck when I know there will be small kids and taken Kraft dinner and cooked hot dogs..... You just never know what will prove popular. Linda C

Linda, Yes, chips, guacamole, salsa, snacks like that will just show up. If I panic and buy them anyway (as I sometimes do thinking I'll run out of food!) I always have lots left over. I was thinking about something like your "salata" That will work as I have lots of sweet onions ready to harvest and cucumbers as well. Lou, I could add other seafood to the shrimp boil. It's a bit more Louisiana-style, less New England, but adding clams and mussels could easily work. I'm trying to stay away from grilling anything that day, so I could instead do a meat/cheese tray for those that just want a sandwich. I like your idea of the spiked watermelon.... just have to figure out how to keep the kids from going for that one!

Something I like with wine is a spread I make with equal parts gorgonzola and marscapone cheese, with added toasted walnuts or hazelnuts. This is fantastic spread on crusty whole grain sourdough bread, and with many kinds of wine. Is also nice to add sliced pears. I also like smoky eggplant dip which is made by roasting an eggplant and then peeling it and putting it in the food processor with a small jar of roasted red peppers. That goes good on bread too, and with wine. You can doll it up with whatever other italian condiments you like, but it is good plain too. I also have served Chase's homeade boursin to raves. Since I have an herb garden it is a fun summer thing to serve with bread and wine. Home Made Boursin with Herbs 1 lb Farmers cheese or 1/2 lb cottage cheese & 1/2 lb Ricotta 8 ounces cream cheese 1/2 cup butter,softened 4 large garlic cloves,minced 2 medium shallots,minced 1/2 cup fresh parsley,chopped finely and packed tight 1/2 cup chopped fresh thyme OR 2/3 cup fresh dill chopped finely 1/3 cup chives,chopped finely 1 tsp pepper,freshly ground 1/4 tsp cayenne Blend the cheeses and butter, add the remaining ingredients. Mix thoroughly. Store in small crocks or ramekins in the fridge until well chilled.

LOL, DL :) - I've got to keep my straight-laced persona for another few hours until I'm done with work - then I fully intend to do 19 containers along with whatever amount of wine it takes to get them done.

Unfortunately for me IÂll be working until about midnight (sshhh thatÂs where I am now not supposed to be spending time on garden web) so my ham and cheese sandwich will have to do until I get home. At which time I shall indulge in a magnificent scotch on the rocks and a tad splash of water. Oh itÂs Friday night maybe another will be in order, Oh itÂs winter solstice perhaps a third. hic hic

Anyone going to be up after midnight, maybe I'll stop by and say hello.

I am bringing Uno's Deep Dish pizza to my solstice party! It's only a party of one, but at least I'm in the eating/partying mood--I just got over some serious food poisoning and actually have an appetite, plus my internet is back! (Which just required me getting well enough to move a bunch of wires around)

I'm sorry for those who want to sow tonight but can't, but I'm sure you'll make up for it shortly!

I'm bringing a paintbrush, can of spackle and a big box of whatever it is I pick up first!
We're finally moving back into our house after 9 long months. Winter sowing is going to have to wait a bit this year!

wow, the pumpkin soup and fondue sound so yummy!
I've got nothing but some milk jugs, not ready yet!
I will have a little snifter of Chambord after the kids go to bed and dh heads off to work.

I have been rather tied up with prep for our holiday party and with my mother arriving tomorrow from overseas for a ten-day stay, x-mas prep in general etc. so the actual wintersowing will have to wait till the new year. But I have recruited at least one new Wintersower and we have plans for a Solstice party next year already. Fondu sounds spot on!

Well, I won't bring anything on the grounds that I have germs (a bad cold). But I'll have my husband drop off a pitcher of his homemade Bailey's (and he leaves another pitcher home for me to benefit from the medicinal properties of Irish whiskey) :-)
