Cap on, Cap off, the Capper

Every year we have questions about removing "uppers". We use words like cap, tops, lids and there always seems to be confusion. So I'm contributing a visual aid to add to the confusion. The screw caps that come on milk jugs and 2 liters should be removed from the very beginning, for ventilation. As the weather warms up the tops, or upper half of the entire container should be cracked open and eventually removed.

This picture illustrates caps off, caps on. I sowed Dahlias on a Friday and left town for the weekend. I accidentally forgot to remove the screw cap from the jug on the right. The seeds steamed, baked, or fried and never sprouted. The container on the left had its screw cap properly removed and rewarded me with sprouts when I returned on Sunday. I hope this visual will help.
