Does anyone have her website under their favorites list or an email addy?? :) I can't remember her website addy for the life of me! I know I've been there at one point or another. She apparently has brugs for sale (specifically a 'Dreamsickle' that I've been looking for.) A friend from another forum said to check with her - but couldn't remember her website address either!! Anyone?? Thanks in advance! :)

I certainly remember that red Georgia mud from my days at Fort Benning! I have the same problem here in southeast Texas, except our soil is ugly Pleistocene clay. Its durability can be attested by the shards of native Attakapan clay pottery that litter the marshes here. Even more unluckily for me, my half-acre was leveled years ago with clay from who knows where. Most of it is black, but a lot of it is a dull, brownish gray, and some is red also. Like you, I tried and tried for years to figure something out. Roto-tillers wouldn't work, they just balled the clay up and became mired down. I don't like to use them anyway, so I invested in a broadfork. Here's my methodology that has finally broken the clay barrier - 1. A few days after a good rain, break up your row with the broadfork, as deep as the tines will go. Takes some time and effort, but is well worth it. It's important that you wait until after a rain because the clay is easier to work when it's slightly moist. 2. Break up the clods with a mattock or whatever you have. I then go in and break the smaller ones by hand. It's not necessary to break up every single clod, just ones that would appear to block a plant root and enough to fill up the gaps. 3. Once your clods are broken up and you have a workable soil, spread a very generous amount of vermiculite on top of the row. Add a few flakes of hay or straw, and then add a few lawnmower bags full of freshly cut grass. 4. Mix everything together, being sure you get a very thorough blending of all the materials, throughout the depth of the bed. The grass will mat up and stay that way forever if you don't. As you mix in everything, spray it every once in a while with a good dose of liquid molasses. 5. Level out the bed, add a very thick layer of fresh cut grass as a mulch, and water it well. The grass mulch works wonders to hold in moisture, and the extra nitrogen is good to have in the already poor clay. I let the beds sit for a few weeks after this to get stuff cooking and settled down. You'll find that all the hard work you did breaking those clods was not for nothing, as the soil will be loose, friable, and have that chocolate cake consistency you keep reading about in the books. I'm certainly no expert, all I know is that this works for me. Not sure if there's any difference between Texas clay and Georgia clay.. HTH Matt

....and finally, if all you can get locally are the 6-footers, then plant away and in all probability, they'll do fine. One thing about pine-family members, they do transplant readily, even larger sized ones. This due in part to shallow root systems , although all trees' root systems are more shallow than is sometimes held in the popular imagination. But a pancake-shaped ball can hold a surprisingly good percentage of the roots on such trees, albeit, we do recognize that even in the best cases, large amounts of roots are lost in the process of digging/transplanting. There, now that we've completely talked in circles-or at least, I have-let us know where things are at! To be honest, a nursery specializing in native trees and shrubs, utilizing careful attention to genetics, would probably do well in the various sections of the country. I've specified tamaracks-Larix laricina-and northern white cedar-Thuja occidentalis-for a good many "native restoration" projects up here. My contractors occasionally have to go through contortions to source this stuff, even though in the wild, it's everywhere! Ten years ago.......I know what I should have been doing! +oM

I've been growing Georgia Flame for several years and have had good luck with germination. Last years records show I sowed 7 and had 6 germinate. I haven't started them yet this year. Okay - thanks everyone for your input. I spent the evening looking over my bills and refiguring the math. I went with a the heat pump for several reasons. #1 - Going complete electric. The furnace was our only gas appliance and once I did the math, I realized it wasn't worth it to keep gas supplied for that because of the delivery charge. (see #2) #2 - in our case, electric heat is cheaper. See if you follow my math: Electric - Right now we pay $0.10 per kWh with an additional 12.77% service charge for various things. I didn't include the sales tax in this calculation b/c it is the same for both services. With fees, that would be $0.1135 per kWh With a HP at 9.5 HSPF, we pay $11.95 per million Btu. Natural Gas - Right now we are paying $0.74 per therm with a $27.99 per month delivery fee (which is standard for our area). Based on last years usage: 12 months x $27.99 = $335.88 We used 681 therms x $0.74 per therm = $503.94 Total cost of $839.82 / 681 therms = $1.23 per therm with fees. With a 95% Eff furnace that ends up being $12.95 per million Btu. Since we are improving the insulation, our therm usage may go down by 30% but our monthly service charge wills stay the same so: [(476 therms x $0.74 per therm) + $335.88 delivery charge] / 476 therms = $1.45 per therm with fees That would drive our our cost per million Btu to $15.26 So . . . Heat Pump Unit and Furnace + AC Units at equivalent efficiency cost the same thing - $5,200 Heat Pump costs $11.95 per mil Btu for heat Furnace costs $12.95-$15.26 per mil Btu for heat I am assuming the cost to cool will be equivalent since both units will use electricity and are equally efficient. In addition, I get $400 rebate on the heat pump. #3 - Our mild climate. While anecdotal, I talked to several people in my area with heat pumps and they were very happy with the temperature control in their house. No one had trouble with the heat pump keeping up during our short and infrequent cold snaps. #4 - Heat pump is greener. Natural gas is a fossil fuel and while fossil fuels are also used to generate electricity, there is always the opportunity for renewable energy sources to be introduced. If we get a NG furnace, we are stuck to only using fossil fuel as an energy source. So . . . that is why I decided on a heat pump. And yes, we are addressing all the insulation and air sealing issues so the house will (hopefully) not be drafty and conducive to heat pump being able to adequately heat our home. Thanks everyone!!!

Techno, I've probably got more than I can handle, but Georgia is relaxing the watering restrictions, so at least now they have a chance of making it! Only a few more weeks and I can get them out of the kitchen window. LOL

I think it was a mistake. I was looking through her site and when i checked under fragrance garden the plants were listed as 8 inches instead of ounces. I couldn't help myself and had to buy that Afterglow. lol

I didnt get far with butt kissin last night. So, I cant get anything. I only had a list of 4 things, lol. The Italian Jasmine, White Choc Jasmine, Kyle's Giant White, and the Afterglow. Cryin out loud, is that too much to ask. Well, I do ask for alot, but Come on!! lol! I won't give up :)

Lemme know how it is when you get it. Have you ever ordered from her before?

I've ordered a couple plants over the years, not brugs and they were fine. Nothing special, just average sized plants but they are healthy. I've also ordered several seed varieties from her.

Well, I'm gonna do my big splurge of the season and get some of my gotta-haves from Brenda/Seedsprout! I can't fit any more hostas in my yard this year- I have 40 hostas still in pots from '07, wondering when the heck they'll see real dirt! In their lifetime???????????? LOL!

lol Brenda, you sound like my MIL. SHe buys so many plants, and has them all around in pots cuz she doesnt have time to get them in the ground. Honestly though, her yard is so jam-packed with plants, I don't know where she does plant the new ones when she gets them in the ground.
I wish I had that many hostas. Bought some babies last year for the shady area in the front, I hope they make it. The ones I have in the back should be a decent size this year, I think I'm gonna put some caladiums in with them.

Patrick, I figured I'd just ask for the actual number because I really was pushing it just asking to begin with. Doesn't matter of I'd asked for 2 or 20, I'd have gotten the same response, "Are you nuts?" lol. I can't complain, he has bought me alot recently; new truck, new puppy, pump for the pond he finally agreed to let me put in the yard. More than a couple plants & cuttings I asked for here and there..o and seeds..and more, lol. All comes down to the fact that I need a job to support my plant addiction. I refuse to go back to work until I have to. ALready got my Easter pres in advance so looks like I wont get more money till mother's day. So, I just have to wait.

Brenda, which ones are you ordering from seedsprout? I am planning on ordering from there when it gets warm here and I can't help but look at the pictures there almost every day! Please let me know what the plants are like. I love hostas too even tho I only have a few. I have regal splendour, patriot( I think), S.Elegans, Scooter, and some NOIDs. They started an alphabet of pics on the hosta gallery, there are so many beauties. What is a good source to order Hostas because my nursery and big box stores carry few varieties. I really want a striptease, northern exposure, blue angel. I have to quit browsing this site, I want way too many plants and am running out of room. :)
