Is anyone else having to deal with pests yet?

A week or two ago I noticed some spidermites on my Dola which had been growing well up until then, then they showed up on Butterfly, then on Arborea. These plants are all near most of my other cuttings and seedlings so I decided they would probably only keep spreading so I decided to drag everything down to the basement and spray with forbid. I really hope this works because the forbid had been mixed and sitting in the sprayer for a few months since the last time I sprayed my brugs right before bringing them in.

So now all of my cuttings, and seedlings and a few brugs I decided to keep growing over the winter are all sprayed and I hope this stops the mites from spreading or coming back. They are so annoying and I was hoping to get through the rest of the winter without seeing them but hopefully they are gone now. Anyone else having to deal with pests?

I am sorry Shawn tha tyou got bug problems. I just had a few gnats in the house. But since I started opening the windows and took the cuttings and plants outside, they seem to be gone. Seedlings are doing ok.

Hope you got them under control now and your babies will be ok.

Just those darn fungus nats!!!!!I really hate those things, did the same as Lucy and put all my baby cuttings outside overnight.Brought them in a few minutes ago and no sign of those darn nats for now.

Yes, I have had a terrible time with snails in the past. This year hasn't been bad so far, but the ones I have are many times over and inch in dimaeter. They shread my gingers and the softer Agaves like my "Joe Hoaks" I couldn't keep a Joe Hoak in a saleable condition in both 06 and 07. Right after a good rain they would come out in the ealry evening and I would go out on the stomping patrol and take out 100 each night as a goal. After about 10 times of that, the number reduced and this year I am seeing my stomping has paid off. I also know they eat up Philodendrons and they probably like the other Aroids as well. They also eat a lot of things in the garden, but I haven't had a garden since the hurricanes dropped a big tree on my square foot garden plots about 3 years ago and haven't had to worry about that.

I heard from the company I got the original shipment of ladybugs from and they sent me a replacement batch. These were very much alive and unlike the first batch went straight to the aphids and are doing a good job. The first ones didn't seem to know what an aphid was and just walked past them. Not these! They climbed straight up the tree to the aphids hanging out on the flowers and new leaves. Sorry, I forget to take pictures of them vaccuuming up all the aphids and my battery ran out. These ladies can fly too and have spread out to all parts of the greenhouse. Unfortunately one of the resident spiders spun a strand and caught about 15 of them in a matter of minutes. I knocked down the thread as soon as I saw them trapped in it but am not sure the ladies escaped. They are fun to watch but I already spend way too much time in the greenhouse. I have scoliosis, too. Mine is the classic "Dowager's hump" on my back - causes jackets and coats to "ride-up" in back so they must be altered. When I was a child, there were no checks for it and no braces. A woman at my pulmonary rehab had hers become so severe that it affected her lungs and digestive tract (when one is bent over, everything becomes all "squished" together). That scared me so I went to see a local world-famous back surgeon. He told me what surgery would be like - first one gets cut on one side, is bedfast on the opposite side for several weeks for the surgery to heal, and then is flipped over the the final surgery is completed on the other side. Altogether, at least 3-4 months in a hospital or rehab facility. Well, that didn't sound very practical or appealing! So I went to a neurosurgeon and he said that surgery should only be done on the young with VERY severe scoliosis. But he did prescribe a course of physical therapy (paid for by insurance) that would help me strengthen my "core" and the muscles in my back and improve my posture. It doesn't "cure" the malformation" but it prevents the other problems walking and sitting all bent-over will cause. I went and I continue to exercise 3 times weekly (at my own expense). I can't do quite what I once did due to age/progressive worsening of my pulmonary function, but I'm not all bent-over and that's a very good thing. It's highly inheritable and fortunately neither of my children and none of my grandchildren have inherited it.

Oh yea I have those stupid gnats too. I am glad they seem to have gone away for you two. Mine are not as bad as they were befor but I still cannot get completely rid of them. Hey maybe they won't like the forbid and they wil die too.

I don't have anything but aphids, but not for long, bayer
advanced kills on contact, it has a lot of bugs, listed
even whiteflys, buckets of water all over the basement
seems to be drowing the knats, good luck on getting those
mites off your babies

I've been dealing with various critters on almost all the plants that I have in the house for the past two months. What's left in the greenhouses are fine. I'm just trying to keep the infestations under control until spring when the plants can go outside. I've been stripping the foliage off some plants that can stand being bare like brugs and just wiping down everything else best I can. The problem is dry air. The aphids, mites, mealies, etc thrive in dry conditions but I can't very well go spray a hose in the living room!

LOL Karyn! I can picture you now with a firfighters hose. hahaha

Just aphids now (but I am prepared). I had the knats and sprayed neem on them and havent seen any. I have been dumping water on the floor in the gh to bring the humidity up too. I think that might be helping a little bit.. :) Barb

The dry air is what is causing my problems too. It would be nice to be able to take the hose to them but in my dining room I don't think so. But I did burn off some of the mites with a lighter, LOL. Just ran a lighter along the webs on my Dola to keep them down until I decided to spray. Maybe that will teach them, lol.

No gnats yet but just wait!!

And yes, just sprayed this morning with FORBID- should have done it sooner but was still too sick and exhausted before today.

Sorry for any of you/us dealing with bugs- let the fun begin!! Not!
It is another month before I can bring my brugs out for some fresh air, with the strong possiblity to toting them in and out of the house several times, as we can get frost as late as mid-April!

Spider mites taking over the GH. Have taken the large brugs out and sprayed them with 3 in 1.
Notice yesterday my cutting has them too!
Dusted the with sevin dust.
Read you can use alcohol with water 1:1
Has anyone tried this??? Would it hurt the brugs???
I have taken off the yellow and large leaves. But their everywhere!!!
Should I strip them???

When I had the problem in January, that first brought me to this forum, with my brugs having the issue of the branches slowly dying down... it was suggested by some to use a systemic fertilizer/pesticide. I used the Bayer liquid systemic, that I found at home depot. The label advised against using it on potted plants, but I did anyway, at a weaker than recommended rate. Worked beautifully. At least I think it did. I have no bugs. I also took the advice of dusting cuts with an anti-fungal powder. So I'm not sure which advice worked, or if it was a combination of the two. Either way, there are NO bugs on my brugs. I usually try to use organic methods when possible in the garden, but sometimes its necessary to bring out the big guns.

And I thought that I was the only sadist. I took a lighter to some aphids last summer. I used one of those long handled ones you use for the fireplace and just watched those little buggers fry. lol

LOL Karyn there just comes a point when you gotta get your frustrations out on them and hope they get the message. I did that to some aphids in the summer on my peach parfait, lol. They make a crackling sound.

I have aphids on several cuttings and seedlings. I just squish them now. There was a time when I would never have squished a bug with my bare hands. That was b4 I had brugs lol.
There are fungus gnats on the epies I decided to use the soap water thing on the roots to see how that works.
