OT~ Nor'easter on the way!

Please, please everyone in the eastern US be safe!!

I just seen Early Show news regarding the huge amounts of snow that have fallen and now the Nor'easter cometh too!

Will be thinking about you all.

This is the strangest weather we have had in a long time. I'm watching the reports of so much snow in the midwest and now the northeast. Here in North Carolina, we have broken records for high temps the last couple of days. It was 80 degrees yesterday and the low is supposed to be down to 26 on Sunday.
Most of the lakes in my area are 6 to 7 feet below normal. I hope that all of you make it through the cold and snow okay and don't lose power. Pray for us to get some rain (or snow) or any kind of precipitation in the southeast.

We had a preview last night with a small storm. Every time I get the weather report, it's a different prediction. They have a tendancy to beef it up and we usually get half the snow they report, but we'll see! The latest news is Saturday night it's due to start around here. As long as I get a bubbler of seeds in the mail from a group swap I joined, I'll be okay :) You can plant with a flashlight!

LOL booberry85. April snow indeed. Here are some pics for your viewing pleasure. Hmmm, I wonder if the clematis will like the snow? Bearded Iris have stalks and not just in this bed but in all the beds. Daylilies are mostly covered with snow too. The lilac bush is in bloom if you can believe that but now a lump of bent over branches. Oranmental cherry trees are in full bloom but we shall see how they "dry" out after this. The huge pussy willow tree had its branches all the way to the ground this morning since the snow was so heavy. I'm so stressed right now. I think I'll put my energies into other things so I can take my mind off of the mess this weather has brought us.

It was 2 degrees here this morning. brrr! Sun is out, haven't been out there yet. Hope these temps are going to be short lived. The furnace has been cranking. Thanks Jane, interesting article. I am a marmalade fan, so IÃ¢ÂÂll have to look for some of these brands that have ginger in them and try it. DtD, that recipe sounds delicious. We will use a roast for pot roast once in awhile, but never thought of using it as a base for chili. So do you use beans with it or just Ã¢ÂÂchiliÃ¢ÂÂ spices? Sounds like I could use a large crockpot, too. Bill, I have been looking for new Ã¢ÂÂsoupÃ¢ÂÂ recipes, so IÃ¢ÂÂll have to try your version this winter. We had an Italian connection in our family in the past, and my Mother was a huge fan of many Italian dishes and got her sauce recipe from an old world Italian woman. We make lots of sauce and chicken cacciatore, minestrone soup and thereÃ¢ÂÂs always some of that in our freezer. Making tiny meatballs for chicken soup sounds like a new fun version. And the escarole adds a lot of nutrition. BTW, there is a new book out called Eating on the Wild Side, that reviews current studies of nutrition in food and I was surprised to learn that a can of tomato paste is chockful of nutrition and during the off season when fresh vegetables are not available from the garden, beans are one of the highest nutritional foods you can eat. And blue cornmeal if from a non GMO source, is also better nutritionally than yellow cornmeal, according to the book. So chili made with canned tomatoes and beans with blue cornbread is a very healthy meal. And the book is a very interesting read, if you donÃ¢ÂÂt find nutrition too dull. It also offers names of varieties of vegetables and fruits that are the highest in nutrition, that you can grow. As for gardening, IÃ¢ÂÂm not quite in the garden mindset yet. Later in January, IÃ¢ÂÂm sure that will change, but I am very interested in how all the Ã¢ÂÂzone pushersÃ¢ÂÂ are faring. As much of a worry as it is to have the temps dip so low, Bill, you are right, this will be a good test of which varieties are really solid zone pushers and I will be fascinated to see whose plants survive come spring. All of them, I hope!

Thanks for the link paula! The high here in the city did reach I think 82 or 83 finally. I noticed that the local NWS forecast discussion for last night (repeated by the day shift this afternoon), had some interesting stats regarding the unusually low number of severe storms this month as well as citing some average temperatures over the past 11 years and doing some musing and speculation, based on past trends, about what might happen this summer. Since they change their forecast discussion pages over time and only archive a few iterations on the website, I'll quote those stats here: .MISCELLANEOUS... The potatoes sounded good so I googled them and found this recipe first thing on all recipes. Bada Bing Bada Banged Potatoes recipe image Rated: rating Submitted By: CJ McD Photo By: LaurenM Prep Time: 10 Minutes Cook Time: 50 Minutes Ready In: 1 Hour Servings: 20 "New potatoes are par-boiled, tossed with Parmesan cheese and lots of dried herbs, and then baked until browned and crispy. " Ingredients: 5 pounds small new potatoes 3/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup melted butter 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1 tablespoon dried basil 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary, crumbled 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 3 tablespoons minced fresh parsley 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese Directions: 1. Preheat an oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). 2. Place the potatoes in a large saucepan of water. Cover; bring to a boil over high heat. LOL, Shimla, I'm waiting for the snow too. We got about 8-9" from Thursday's storm (I'm near Binghamton), so we'll just have to see what falls this weekend. My kids are LOVING all this snow, after two "dry" winters. I'm wondering if I should put my winter sown containers down in the driveway turnaround instead of out in the back yard, where I won't have to trudge through the drifts. Hmm, decisions decisions. I'm waiting for seeds in the mail too. That's just as good as Christmas! (I suggested to my husband that a bale of ProMix under the tree would be nice, but he won't do that. He does NOT want to tell friends that he bought his wife DIRT for the holiday!)

I would LOVE some snow, but would gladly settle for rain - we need it so badly.
I've come to the conclusion that the weather forecasters don't know anything - the forecasts change sometimes hourly here!
Ggwrn, I hear you! This has been the most bizarre year, weatherwise, in NC. I am sincerely praying for rain. . .My garden was so hard to keep up with this year, more frustrating than relaxing. . .Hope next year's better for all of us here in the southeast.

We are expecting it here in Nova Scotia, Canada, too.

I've welcomed the old winter we are getting and was looking forward to this great snowfall, but there's also a system which will be following it which concerns me even more. By Wednesday we are expecting rain and +10C. I didn't mulch anything for the winter seeing as we were finally getting snow to provide a much needed natural insulation/mulch. I can't even go outside to do anything about it since I've caught the flu and have been hitting a fever of 38C/102F! Ah well, nature will take it's course.

Well we only got about four inches yesterday...I'm surprised because it was falling hard all day and I thought sure we'd have a foot by the end of the day. Now they say it all depends on how the front gets to us whether we'll have just 4-7 inches or 18-24 inches.

I'm with you. I'm so glad to see snow and I wouldn't mind at all if it stayed until March. I finally realized how good it is for plants here to have that snow cover/insulation-- and I didn't get to mulch this year either.
There's a lot of people on wells around here (and a lot of farmers). Season-long snow is good prep for the growing season and full wells.
(Plus...the temps are always relatively warmer when we have snow...to have it dry means the temps are really really cold!!)
--And after last February, none of this weather we're getting in my area seems like much at all.

Well, I did enough shoveling yesterday (we got about 8" Thursday, mostly after dark) to make my back cranky, and that's enough for the year as far as I'm concerned. Supposedly the nor'easter is going to be more of a rain event here, and plants or no, I'm all for that.

Tiffy: I hope you start to feel better soon. That's so miserable.

Here the storm is supposed to start as snow, then change to sleet and freezing rain, then rain, then back to sleet/freezing rain, then back to snow. Should be interesting to say the least.

Since we're supposed to go to a Christmas party tonight about 30 miles from our house, I'm just hoping for anything but ice. It could be a loooong drive tonight.

I shoveled about 11" as well and couldn't agree more,however here's the bad news, winter doesn't officially start until next weekend, YECK...

Doing better today. Still have the sniffles and the cough attacks, but the terrible aches have gone just in time for the shoveling to begin.

Went to the flea market this morning and got a birdhouse for $5.00 to do some mosaics on and place in the garden in the spring. Love to do that stuff during a storm. Treated my 13 year old daughter to lunch too. She treated me like a queen when I was feverish. She makes a mean hot cocoa!

The nor'easter has begun. The neighbourhood boys are out with their ATVs and skidoos already. All in good fun, they are towing the younger kids behind them on their toboggans. I so enjoy living where the snowplows ignore your road for a long enough time for the kids to take advantage. Makes for real winter fun!

Heading to start my birdhouse. Glad to see all weathered the storm nicely.

It sounds like you are doing much, much better Tiffy!

We just had a few inches of (heavy!) snow but the sleet has been beating down on us for about an hour. It's a good toboggan day! Haven't tuned into the news to see how the rest of you are doing yet.

This storm had great timing :-) I finished my last class last Tuesday. So I don't have to go ANYWHERE! (The worse thing about a snow storm is having to DRIVE in it!)

So much for my bulbs, though. They're going to have to go in post on the porch.

Hang in there, everybody. Drink lots of hot cocoa, and take breaks in between shoveling.

Well I just read the Yahoo News report regarding the storm about 3 mins. ago! So far 3 deaths due to traffic incidents :O
