Comments (1)I wouldn't go too crazy with adding nitrogen. It makes the plants grow more foliage quicker. the foliage is weaker and it attracts more insects. I only fertilize once per growing season. Not all plants tolerate the dish soap spray. I would use BT (which is a natural spray) only if I see caterpillars. Alot of bugs are harmless. Comments (27)johnb51: That's what I have heard: that SW side is more economical and less crowded but it probably depends on 'where' exactly lol. I would have to be zoned agriculture and away from the larger cities a little bit since I have chickens and loud roosters. They do make good fertilizer! :P I was also born in L.A. but later moved to Phx AZ. I love it in FL. The humidity took some getting used to compared to the Southwest. I've been out here 3 years now. marinfla: I like your mango story. Its funny how little things can change our lives. Your yard sounds like paradise. I can't wait until I can put my fruit trees in the ground and not worry about freezes so much. Bob1016: Sounds like you had quite an education in fruit trees since you were very young. What a nice environment to grow up in! I can imagine that you miss it and your grandfather quite a bit. njoasis: Sounds fun! I just bet they do! Can you make a good mojito? lol...See MoreSucculent nurseries in south Florida?
Comments (9)In the few times that I've visited south Florida (Miami, Kendall, Coral Gables, Homestead) I didn't really see much in the way of succulents like you do out west in California. Nurseries tend to carry plants that will grow well outdoors, and most succulents aren't that well suited for humid, wet conditions planted in the ground. Hence, you see nurseries in CA offering succulents are hedge material, foundation plantings, groundcover... etc. In South Florida, you'll find a dizzying selection of bromeliads and palms. I remember seeing some overpriced echeverias and sedums at a little nursery in Wynwood. And Isaac Farms Nursery had a decent selection of succulents, but the selection wasn't much more than what you can find at Lowes or HD. They carried mostly soft succulents meant for pot culture. Pachypodium lamereii grows really well there in the ground and is very common in people's yards. I would expect the big box stores to carry them for fairly cheap....See MoreSucculent cuttings potted into moistened cactus mix: mistake?
