OT camellias starting to bloom

Thought I would share some pics I took this morning. The camellias are about the only thing blooming around here now. Names unknown.

I believe if somebody asks for camellia _sinensis_, they want the leaves not the blooms. It will be quite disappointing to get something else. Here is a picture of a flower from Sochi Tea plant (camellia sinensis var assamica) from a few days ago. Does any of your camellias have similar blooms? If you have favorable conditions for camellias and live in the zone 8, you can grow your own tea! I'm not the original poster, just asking some off topic questions. Thanks for answering!

James, it seems as if your camellia is too tender for your area and easily suffers from environmental stress, that is when temperature and/or humidity levels change. Some camellias will react with bud drop when the temperature/humidity change a lot so, when bringing camellias indoors, I would suggest doing it when the exterior and interior temperature/humidity are similar so the plant does not into a form of transplant shock. It is important to always maintain soil humidity levels as constant as you can. That is, try not to have dry soil conditions in between waterings. Or try not to have periods of wet soil either. To help with that, manually test the soil humidity by inserting a finger into the soil to a depth of 4" (10.2cm) and water the same amount of water when it feels almost dry or dry). Test daily for 1-2 weeks and make notes of how often you have to water the soil in a calendar. After 1-2 weeks, then review the results and plan on watering as often as your notes said you did (that is, water every 3/4/5/6/etc days). Inside the home, the humidity should be similar to the ones that camellias are used to in their country of origin (think greenhouse-like levels). This is usually difficult to do (inside homes) during winter and in areas where air vents are close to the shrubs. You may need some form of humidifiers to help sometimes. To make the buds open earlier, you can also use gibberellic acid. Camellia flower buds can be forced into blooming earlier following treatment with gibberellic acid say, in early Fall. Dave, It's about 3Â½ feet tall by 6 feet wide. This one has a spreading habit rather than really upright. I prune it every year to encourage bushiness because it tends to be a bit leggy. I prune using the 50/50 method since it blooms on old wood. That way I get flowers every year. It is rock hardy here so you should have no problems whatsoever in that respect.

I learned a while ago that Camellias set out their buds for future blooms in mid to late Summer and require a lot of water during that time. And because in PNW Summer often has little to no rain if you do not irrigate your Camellias (and also Kalmias) you won't see any flowers next season. I experienced that with Camellia 'Kumasaka' which I planted close to a very thirsty maple tree. After no blooms for two years in the row, I did some research and then watered the heck out of it in August and finally got the thing blooming next Spring. I know that it's too late now but try to really keep the plants moist in the coming Summer (I watered mine every other day for a month) and feed with very diluted fertilizer for blooms (higher number in the middle) and wait. My two very large potted Camellias 'Yuletide' placed next to the northern wall of my house are full of buds and some of them are finally opening. Unfortunately the frost we had for last week probably killed many of them. I hope some of them survived or I will be really upset.

Those are very pretty. That is all I have blooming too unless you count the pansies. I will take pictures of mine if the temperatures get warm enough today. It was in the teens this morning. That isn't even civilized here. LOL

Reminds me of the book by Alexandre Dumas, Lady of the Camellias (or Camille), which I read recently on the plane ride to a recent holiday. Easy reading. Wonderful flower. I only wish that I could grow them here in frozen southern Ontario.

O those are so beautiful! Thank you for sharing! I have never heard of these..now I have to have them! lol. OMG I was just reading they are hardy in my zone! ANd they are evergreen?!?! My yard SOOO needs evergreens. I wonder why I have never seen these for sale anywhere around here. How big are the blooms?
Do you know anything about starting them from seed? Does the seed come true? Easy to germinate? How long to bloom when grown from seed? Fast or slow grower? I MUST find these. I need about 20.
Sorry for so many questions, but this is perfect for me.

The camellia blooms vary depending on the variety. There are Camellia Japonica which have bigger flowers and leaves and usually bllom in the spring, and then there are Camellia Sasanqua which have smaller leaves and somewhat smaller flowers ( depending on the variety) and usually bloom in the fall.
They will start from seed, but most camellias set very little seed and most of the time the seed doesn't come true.
They don't grow real fast like some shrubs, but they are kind of moderate. I have several that I can share cuttings from. The best time to take cuttings is in the early summer. They seem to be easy to root, but they take a long time. You have to be patient............. ( not like me!)
They like to live in sun/part shade and the sasanquas can take a lot more sun.
If you want cuttings in the early summer, let me know.

Linda said it well. I can tell you the pictures I posted, the blooms are about 3 inches. They burn in California zone 9 if in afternoon summer sun. They grow very slowly for me, 6-12 inches a year. I have some old family photos that have a camellia that I can show the growth. 1st is 1953 & 2nd photo is 1966 of the same camellia.

Just beautiful. I just got one at Lowes the other day. I have missed them so much from Louisiana. I didn't want to pay much because I don't know if they will take our heat here but I found some small ones for $6 so I Patty and I each got one a red and a pink and there were two in each pot so we swapped colors. I will check next time I go back and see if they have anymore for you Daniella. Sometimes they have them at walmart and Lowes, HD this time of year but never see them in the summer. Thats what scared me, lol. I will keep mine in a pot so I can move them into more shade in the summer. They are really beautiful but pretty slow growers to me. They flower at a small size though!

Kristy, $6! really! nice! Flowering at a small size is good, lol. I don't like to wait years for blooms! I bet they don't have them in the summer, just because they are a spring blooming plant. They dont like to have plants that aren't in bloom out for sale. ya know, people are more likely to buy them if they have blooms and/or buds. Like Amaryllis for example, ya NEVER see them any time winter, at least I don't, lol.
I don't know about the camellias in your area, but I would think an area with bright shade, or morning sun afternoon shade would be good? Maybe by the GH!

Wow! Those are incredible. Reminds me of way back when growing up in southern Mississippi........no spring like a southern spring; but you must be well ahead of them.

My sister said the azealeas and camelias are beginning to bloom in Louisiana too. I love the spring time there with so many huge old flowering trees blooming all over the place.
