Now I know that hubby has been listening!

DH works as a social worker at an elementary school and he came home yesterday and said I'd have loved being there that day. He said that some outside person/group had a butterfly display there just for that one day. Although the cage wasn't huge (about the size of a refrigerator), it was enough to show a few species of butterflies. I guess the display didn't actually name what was inside, but hubby said that he saw a Monarch, some Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, some fritillaries, and one or two that he wasn't sure of. I know that he also knows the Viceroy because when he said he saw a Monarch, he added, "And no, it wasn't a Viceroy!" :) I asked if any buckeyes were there (that's one that I really would like to get here someday because I think it's so beautiful!), and he said that there weren't any.

Oh, and I don't know how he and somebody had gotten on the subject of butterflies one time last year, but whoever it was mentioned to him that she wanted to plant some paw paw trees because she was interested in butterflies. I think he wanted to impress her with his knowledge and didn't let on right away that I am also interested in them. When he told her that the Zebra Swallowtail cat eats the paw paw leaves, I guess her eyes about popped out of her head, and she said, "How did you know THAT?!" Ha!

LOL, I'm just tickled pink that my ramblings haven't fallen on deaf ears. Sometimes I'm afraid that I might be boring people with what I say, but I blab on anyway because I just love butterflies so much and I guess I think everyone else should too! :-D

Speaking of butterflies, I hope that I see more here soon than I have been seeing. I can't blame them for not hanging around right now; it's been pretty cool. Of course, we also don't have any flowers blooming now that the lilacs are done. I think the earliest blooming flowers that I've ever had here were snapdragons, which are an annual and aren't blooming yet. I just planted them out two weeks ago. Maybe I should do some research for some early blooming plants sometime (for next year)

I'm trying to do most of my planting with perennials because there will come a day when my body says enough with the digging, so I'd like to be able to have things come up on their own every year and hopefully spread like my coneflowers are doing and few weeds will be able to come up (wishful thinking?).

The butterflies seen here so far are Cabbage White (I guess everyone gets those!), Mourning Cloak, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Black Swallowtail, and some skippers. It seems like I'm missing one but can't think what it would be. Well, I know for sure that I haven't seen any Monarchs here yet, which is good because my milkweeds aren't real big yet, maybe a foot. I had wanted to improve my butterfly cage before they get here, but considering that I've barely made a dent in my planting and have a LOT more sod digging to do first, I don't think I'll get the cage changed this year. I'll have Monarchs in there in pupas yet at the end of September or even the beginning of October, so maybe after they eclose, I can work on it. I know, when it's around the beginning of September, I could raise the remaining cats on our back porch (screened). Since I'll be taking the cage apart to work on it, I couldn't very well dismantle it if there would be pupas up at the top. Arg, I always have these plans swirling around in my head; too bad I don't get things done as fast as the ideas swirl!
