Liatris and silphium (Cup Plant) - sow fresh???

I have a couple kinds of liatris seeds to winter sow this year. I have l. ligulistylis and l. pycnostachya.

I also have a couple kinds of silphium (Cup Plant and Compass Plant).

They are seeds I ordered and just received but I think they may have been packed for 2010.

I'm finding references that say to sow fresh, so I'm wondering if anyone has had good germination with these if they were stored first and then cold stratified. I'm going to be disappointed if nothing comes in the spring.

Also - is there a big list somewhere on the web that shows which seeds need to be sown fresh?
