I thought I had pinched off all buds, but one got by me and opened last night inside the house. I smelled the wonderful essence that I love so much are went on a mission trying to find the source. Here is the culprit.... Frosty Pink

Many rosarians insist that pinching for the first buds leads to bigger ones in the next flush. I have never pinched anything off. I guess I just have wanted to see them bloom, and you can't do that if you have pinched them out. I, frankly, could see no differences in bud sizes whether they were pinched out or not. I would say the choice is yours whether to pinch out or not.

Actually, plantlady, Dahlias are a lot like potatoes. The Aztecs used to grow them for the tubers, which they harvested like potatoes and cooked with like potatoes. I have taken cuttings even with no roots and they root within 3 weeks if kept moist. Last year I made a whole collection of 80 plants of about 50 varieties for my mother starting with little or no roots. The plants still grew to full size and, remarkably, had full tubers at the end of the season. There was no way to tell the difference between these and the ones planted with full tubers. Dahlias are extremely forgiving and resilient. You should feel free to experiment if you want to make more plants. By the way, I didn't even chill my tubers this year. I left them in grow bags full of soil and stacked them up in the back of my heated greenhouse and didn't water them. Out of 213, only 2 have yet to come back--they began sprouting in March when the temperatures in the greenhouse turned tropical. They are all about 2 - 3 feet tall now and it's getting crowded in there. I think there are a lot of myths surrounding the the care and handling of the tubers. Stories get handed down and everyone forgets to experiment.

Thaks for your reply. I have had buds on my tps for the last two years but never the flowers. There was that late frost last year and I couldn't tell if I lost the flowers to the frost or some other reason. Hopefully I'll finally get the flowers this year. I do have a tp just planted that's very small and spindly. I was surprised to a flower bud. Its flower bud is very close to the leaves. Do I just sort of squash the bud so I don't damage the leaves in the process of removing the flower bud?

beautiful baby, congratulations!!! And totally NOT off topic.... babies introduce a LOT more laundry into life. And, that was how I ended up justifying a Miele washer ...on board heater for cloth diapers....went from indifferent to laundry equipment to laundry and Miele washer obsessed

Jroot, that looks so pretty, and I can almost smell it here. I think you gave me a cutting from Frosty Pink last year in the fall, and it is one of the few cuttings that is doing very well for me. It rooted up pretty well, and is now about two feet tall. It has finally gone outside for a few hours now that we have gotten some warm sunny days, and seems to have just taken off. I am hoping mine will bloom like that for me this summer. Love all the pics people share. Thanks.

jroot, just curious, why do you pinch off all of the buds? Does that help the plant or blooming somehow?

My thinking is that producing a flower takes a lot of energy from the plant. So, if I pinch the flower off (in the winter only ) then the plant will reserve that energy and will produce more prolificly in the summer when outdoors. That is what I really want to happen.
