OT - long-stemmed rose growing in vase?

my lad bought me some roses a few weeks back, one of which has a startling amount of new leaf growth. the rose itself has long since wilted, but the leaf growth from day to day is highly visible. is there any way this silly thing could root in there? I've never seen a rose do that before. I don't see any kind of root growth, but the leaves are getting bigger and greener.

anyone heard of anything like this? the rose in question was absolutely gorgeous, sort of a frosty pink variety. if there's any way I could root this guy, I'd be thrilled!

Wow - that sounds beautiful.

I tried growing lots sterling silver roses a while ago. (Frosty Silver Pink color) I am an abject failure with roses. And I went through tons! (grin)

Wouldn't that be great if it can? I didn't think they did that though.

Hey - did you try to look up your rose and find out if you can easily grow them from seed?

Florist roses are grown with large amounts of nutrients in perfect conditions. So, the stems have a lot of stored carbohydrates in them. Because of these stored carbohydrates, the stems can do just what yours has--produce new growth even though it's been cut from the plant. Unless you have roots, sooner rather than later the stems stored carbohydrates will be exhausted, and the rest of the stem will die. If you do have roots, you can pot it up and try and grow it. Some florist roses make good garden roses, and some don't. If you would like to try rooting a rose, do a google on: how to root a rose and a lot of information will come up. Usually fresh stems are required for success.

aggierose, I have a number of roses that rest for about 3 to 3.5 weeks after their first big bloom of the year. Yes, they just sit there doing nothing sometimes--drives me nuts! Then they take off again. So patience is probably the best advice for now. You do know that many roses don't really hit full stride until their third year, don't you? You may be surprised next year how much better they perform. The only other consideration I can think of is how much sun do they get--6 or more hours a day? If they are in part shade, they will often be much slower to re-bloom and may not have as many blooms as those that get more sun. Oh, I might also mention that while RoseTone is a terrific fertilizer, it is slow-acting. I think most organics probably are. Just imagine those roots getting bigger and stronger while nothing seems to be happening up on top. Maybe that will help you survive the next week or two--maybe? Kate

You might gather more information if you post this question on the Rose Propagation and Exchange Forum. I wish I could help with your question, but don't know.... There are very fragrant red Hybrid Tea roses that one buy, that might be similar to the ones that you tried to root. Chrysler Imperial is very fragrant, a great rose.

With cuttings, anything can go wrong, but I would focus on hydration/heat, first, then the mix you're using second. On a 95F day, plants can dry out very fast. A small cutting can't pull water fast enough from the soil to keep up. You also have to be careful about transplanting them into a mix that's too hot. I normally pot up in pro-mix, which has zero fertilizer, and use a very weak solution of Miracle Gro to feed them for a month or two. With a small cutting, too much fertilizer (organic included) can cook them.

rialira, I would recut the bottom and put them in dirt like you would do a Brugmansia cutting. I love to start roses but I do them directly into the soil at the end of February when we cut our roses back. Best of luck!

I would cut the bottom, dip in root hormone, stick in sandy soil, water throughly, then I would cover with a mayo. jar. Make sure the soil never drys out until new leaves start to form, then remove the jar. This is how I root roses from cuttings in Texas, its very easy to do. I have never heard of a rose rooting in a vase. Barbra,

T-dweeb, I just cut and stick back into the ground!! No covering or nothing, some folks put a jar over them. I have a yard of roses that I just get cuttings and put them where I want. I was just out doing some hard wood cuttings and putting them back into the soil to root. I'm working on a whole forest of yellow chain trees, maples, creep murtle (that's what the boys call it), and pink dogwoods.

All those stunners - I received - said what I shame I can't grow them (which I can't but I SHORE AS SH*** WOULD HAVE TRIED!). . . .and I threw them away?!?!?

there's actually ANOTHER rose growing in there. I just noticed it.

what.

it's really really cool, too, it was yellow and orange and looked like a little blossoming fireball at the end of a stem. never seen one like it. if I could root THAT one... man...

I've counted what should be at least five nodes on the thing, too. and I'm talking ROBUST growth, this one's even got another little bud forming. this is awesome. if I change the water frequently and give it some light fertilizer, do you think I've got a chance? it was also pretty much prepared well as a cutting to begin with, the leaves of the bottom few nodes were stripped, but the top node has tremendous growth on it.

think I should re-cut the stem or just leave it? it was cut several weeks ago and looks a little bit fuzzy, but I don't really want to mess with it.

I think I'll just change the water and stop fretting :)

LOL... That was how they did it in the old days...My Grand had the most beautiful roses.. She would take a cutting stick it in the ground next to where she would throw out the dish wash water...they root.. I am not a big Rose fan but on occasion will get a cutting and start it for someone else.. I do use a jar over mine..I can kill a Rose.. LOLOL I can root them but I can not grow them..Certain death at my house...

I can grow roses, I've had people try to buy them right off my bushes. I think I know all the secrets to grow sucessful roses. They are just too time consuming. I do not live there, and I have to fight the cut ants. I will try again when I retire. Once I found the cure for blackspot, everthing else was easy. If I could have just controled the cut ants, I would still have my rose garden today. Barbra,
