I do not have access to the publications of new hybrids.
I should first class my "Flamingo" in the existing lot of comparable hybrids. Only hybrids which are to a minimum degree "uncomparable" to already existing cultivars can be registered!

I already noticed one other hippeastrum on the web, with spectacular color profile, deeper purplish color, considerable bloom size and strongly frilled edges, thus being more spectacular and surpassing "Charisma" (sorry *ggg*) "Temptation" and "Showmaster" easily.

Until now I have only one bloomable bulb and few offsets of Flamingo.
On the other hand I have selfed it and I am growing 16 selected seedlings in order to see how the spectacular color distribution varies in the progeny and if this is retained at all...

No you don't have to say sorry Hans...that's fine. There is a saying like this..."Beauty is in the beholder's eyes". Anyway, for me...all of these flowers are beautiful. I just have some favorites...and FLAMINGO is one of them!!!

By the way Hans, you made me very curious here now. What's the name of the Amaryllis you saw on the web?

I saw this one in several magnifique cutflower bulk arrangements for ornamenting the exposition rooms of a CASTLE! - Published on the WEB!
There was - as you can imagine - no labelling on these wonderfull flower compositions which decorated so formidably and luxuriantly tables and corners!

I shall try to find the link again and I shall include it here (as I do not want to upload the images I stored - isolatedly).

WOW...that link was awesome Hans! Yes, that Amaryllis does have a more pronounced and deeper color in it and red/maroon frilly edges (which I know you like). It's got a green throat too. Flamingo may be simpler but it reminds me of an orchid flower. Well, I like things simple...with very good substance and details in it. For me, frilly doesn't mean pretty. Ooooops...my turn to say sorry.

Taken together - that is a great plea for my "Flamingo". I must indeed reflect on amplifying my insufficient ambitions to multiply the clone and get an offset for you

Yes, I must admit that I think your Flamingo is one of the most beautiful hybrids I have ever seen. If you ever do get offsets, it would be a pleasure to propagate them for you.

Hope that if you decide to register your 'Flamingo' the name will be accepted as there is a cybister hybrid already registered as 'Flamengo'. Of course, the two look nothing alike, but in registering a name, care is taken by the resitering board not to register a new plant under a name that may cause ID confusion. The two names are too close to being the same and one is easily mis-spelled for the other to be a preferred choice, as far as registering goes.

But---your 'Flamingo' is indeed gorgeous and I would be among the first to add it to my collection under *any* name.

There are misleading name similarities out there. Look at the Dutch Amigo, large flowering red with white stripe at the throat, and Amico from Hadeco, a miniature, red with white stripe at the throat. The two flowers are even look alikes... There is only difference in size and flower shape. But the basic look is the same, and the name only has one letter difference... How easy it is to mix up! Not by me, but by everyday buyers...

I've noticed that about Amigo and Amico too. It just creates confusion. But since the two are so much alike, maybe that was a well thought out decision.......

Currently, I'm wondering about the new release 'Limona' (distributed Llangeveld) and 'Limone' (introduced by Nieukerk, don't know who distributes it.)

Both are lemony-whites with green tints.

I have a newly planted 'Limona' (as it was tagged), but haven't grown 'Limone' or seen anything but pictures of it.

Compare the pictured flowers on the linked page. The pic at the top is "AmaryllisLemonLimeHeader" and the one with 'Limone' is titled "Lemon&LimeLI". Looks like the same flower to me. But are they Limone, Limona or Lemon-Lime? LOL.

the site you gave us has a mistake on it as well. Be careful. Elvas doesn't look like that at all.
It is most likely Andes, which has random red coloration in double white petals. So you see, you can't even believe professionals. I think Limona and Limone are the same, just someone made a mistake when spelling the names. At least I hope so.
I bought Limona myself this year. Have not potted it yet. It is sleeping in my wine cooler. Tomorrow, when Milady opens, I'll plant Aphrodite. Then wait for Benfica to open it's petals. There is always something new to wait for. Especially if you have as many bulbs as I do... (It is a sickness, belive me. I think it is called OCD (Obsessive, Compulsive Disorder))

Seller also has a Melusine up for sale, but that flower is also NOT Melusine... Hopefully he or she will be more into fixing the problem than mimi was in the first place. Her items are still mislabeled on e-bay.

I agree, 'Limona' could be 'Limone' misspelled.

In Read's book (pub. in 2004)she writes that 'Limone'was in commercial production in 2003. It isn't clear form the text, so I'm not sure if that means they were available for purchase or not. Sounds to me like they hadn't been released for sale as that point.

Googling comes up richer by far for 'Limona'. So Read could have spelled it wrong in the first place, and the true name is 'Limona' as tagged. Don't know. I bought a Llangveld calla tagged 'Gem Lavender' but see it 'Lavender Gem' elsewhere.

As far as the eBayer goes, since I sent the pic of an actual 'Chico' I haven't heard anything, but as of this morning, the error is still on the page.

Hope you are able to find your'First Love'. I really like the rose-red veins-on-whites. African Hybrids are so rarely available in the US it seems, so you might have to find someone to share an offset.

South African Hybrids are available in the States in big quantities, but not all the varieties. Thai Thai drives me crazy, but I haven't seen it advertised anywhere unfortunately. I guess they have cultivars on their web site that are still in production and awaiting for wide release. Maybe First Love is the same.
It is very easy to find South African varieties. They are available now in the garden stores and in the web stores.
As I said, it all depends on the variety.

I found out that my 'Limona' is rightly called 'Limona'.

But I am very disappointed in the bulb I have: It isn't 'Limona'. I don't know what it is, but it doesn't say a thing to me. There is some faint salmony coloring and reddish stripes in the throat, but the whole thing looks weak, a bulb that just lacks and spark at all in the tepals, but has one neat point: the pink style tip.

I like the flower, but I wouldn't call it Limona either... My Milady doesn't look like Milady to me either... But I just let it go now... At least I got a flower from the bulb and I can keep it and cross it with Amalfi.

I like your 'Blushing Yellow Goddess' for the fuller distribution of color and the greater intensity it has obver whatever it is I have. It is a delicate combination that appeals to me. Perhaps in stronger light, mine would be prettier.......

One thing that bothers me about my bulb being incorrect is that I paid nearly double the price asked for the other bulbs at the garden center, including some of the x cybisters such as 'Lima' and 'Ruby Meyer'. I'm taking it back for a refund, exchange or credit.

Take a picture to the store first and tell them your problem. They might just give you another bulb or refund. Don't break your flower for nothing if they are amicable correcting the problem or don't require you to return the bulb.

It's getting a little bit more color. The beard tepal is showing a blush whereas it was all yellowish-green-white yesterday. Unfortunately, it was cloudy today and will be rainy all day tomorrow. :-(

I know more direct sun would help, if there was any.

When the bulbs start flowering, I take them away from direct sunlight, and they tend to bring up bigger flowers for the second and third stalks. I guess the warmth and direct sunlight forces the stalks to emerge, but the flowers are better when they actually have more time to develop and have a little darker and colder environment.

I place my newly planted bulb upstairs where it's in the 70s and directly above a vent. This brings out the scape and leaf if any for me. Once the scape is about 6 inches tall, I put it in a bright window with like 6 hours of direct sunlight, turning the pot every other day. If the first bud if about to open, I relocate it downstairs where it's in the 60s in a bright window with some sunlight. Flowers that opened downstairs have deeper/brighter color. Flowers that opened upstairs have paler color. I still need to document the difference in flower size though.

Remember to put the plants away from bright sunlight once they are in bloom. Many times I cut the stalks and put them in large vases where I create displays of different varieties that usually last about 2 weeks(water changed daily).

I don't have to worry about the light fading colors so much, though it is something to bear in mind. The windows here get only a few hours of afternoon sun, and this time of year till spring, it's that weak winter light, and is seldom strong enough for me to bother with.

However, there are some hybrids and perhaps species that need light to develop some of their coloration. The color is just better from some exposure to light. Trial and error will show which ones need how much under specific exposures and would naturally vary widely in our different locals and situations.

A 'Red Lion', for instance, will color up red in total darkness. You can see how red they are even before the bud-spathes are fully parted. I imagine the self-colored solids would "need" less light to color up well, but again, each one should be tested to satisfy each of us as to what works best.

Other hybrids that are white or lightly colored with an overlay of colored veins, blushes or markings, seem to need light to develop properly. That's just my experience and seem to happen for others (particularly those in the Northeast) who not only have poor winter light but often flower their plants away form direct sun, brief as it is in winter for them. In discussing the "disappointing" colors (according to both our estimations) the lack of light in some bi-colors as I described above, the most frequent circumstance was the poor light.

Hans mentioned something about lighting affecting the colors of his flowers too in an older post. Indoors he grows his amaryllis using artificial light and outdoors of course natural light. Hellooooo Hans...where are you???

Sir Hans, I really hope you've been successful with propagating your Flamingo with your self-seeds. This variety is stunning and deserves to be available commercially! =) Sooooo beautiful.

"Flamingo" proved vey susceptible to rotting. I regret that I have rescued only some bulblets. This hybrid which I assumed to be "Bordeaux red" x "Picotee" was presumably a result of accidental pollination by single pollen grains of "APPLEBLOSSOM".

In fact I received seeds when I selfed this hybrid. The poor yield indicated reduced viability and, as if to confirm that the seedlings were rather weak. Despite I wanted to discard them I selected 12 seedlings. These revealed a very differential growth behaviour. Some of them remained small and poor, and among these who did better I have two which look as if they could bring a scape now, and one... yes one is already sending a scape. In 4 weeks we shall know more!

It seems the interest of the origonater of this post in this plant was very short lived, has any one ever heard from him again.
