Do you plant 'random' B-fly plants, or to attract specific ones?

Since I know nothing about b-fly gardening (this is maybe my 3rd visit to this forum), but I enjoy them (& hummers), I figured this year I would focus more on adding plants to attract them.

I have no clue what I'm doing. I have a few lists...I have participated in a butterfly swap...and I've gotten my 'butterfly & hummer' newsletter from BHG.com. Those, and red. Lots of red being planned.

What am I going to DO with all these plants? You got me there. Random plantings. Hope for the best.

Do you usually plan for specific BFs that hang out in your area, or try to attract others that are more elusive?

Does one REALLY need a "plan," or can you fly by the seat of your plants (haha, I'm funny), and still get decent results?
