Broke down and bought another brug

I've said that I wasn't buying anymore brugs and have been really good. The only one that I really wanted I kept getting outbid on anyway, until tonight. I finally got my culebra : )Even better I only paid $11.51. I guess not that many people were watching it tonight because it usually goes for a lot more. This seller puts one up every week or so. The only other one I've seen for sale recently was from Mark (I think) and it was a nice big expensive one. I'm definitely done with brugs for a while but have ordered some other cool plants.

The bad part of that branch looks like it has probably walled itself off and the rest of the plant should be okay. It has some healthy looking growth on there. The southern exposure is probably okay in Phx this time of year but come later spring/summer I would put it in afternoon shade or dappled shade. We had ours under a huge cottonwood tree when we lived in Phx where they got dappled shade and they did good that way. You might also consider putting them in the ground and mulching around the root area once you find a spot that your brugs like in the yard in the spring. It is easier to keep them watered and the roots cooler if you put them in the ground and mulch them. Just keep your mulch a little ways off of the trunk to prevent any rot around the trunk. You can run a soaker hose under the mulch and water at night or early morning to prevent evaporation since it is so dry there. At least you do not have to worry too much about fungal diseases or slugs there as some places :) ~Lenette

I bought a dish of primrose back last winter - Feb I think - they were beautiful till the heat set in - I put the dish in the shade house and low and behold ONE of the four plants lived and is really perking up with this cooler weather. I have not had that happen here in NC before. I had gorgeous ones up in Delaware - they were perennials up there so they can take the cold and freeze. It is our heat down here that does them in.

Why I'm not impressed by numbers stats when viewed in perspective: GM offers 48 models in the US; Toyota offers 16. If GM doesn't outsell Toyota, they're even more pathetic than I thought. Ford outselling Honda is not a surprise. Honda is a very small mfg in Japan, hardly anyone drives one. The company long ago made the decision to concentrate on the US market: they were one of the first to introduce models that were US-designed and aimed solely for export, such as the Accord and the entire Acura line. JD Powers survey is INITIAL car quality (first 30 days only). It has nothing to do with reliability. The reliability of US cars has improved, but they still lag behind the Japanese. Depending upon where you live, you may indeed find a Toyota or Honda shop full - because their dealer/repair network is much smaller than the Big 3, so they tend to concentrate where the sales are. IOW, the coastal areas, especially in the West, you have no problem finding repair shops who will take you quickly. In our experience, we've had far more trouble with the 1996 Buick Regal than with any of the Fords we've owned over the last 30 yrs, including the original Escort, the original Contour, and a 1995 Taurus. Our 2003 Hyundai has been almost trouble-free, and the few minor things (door lock failed, seat cushion got stuck and wouldn't fold down) were quickly fixed by cheerful service reps or covered under the extended warranty we purchased. If I had more money to burn, I'd go back to Acura, because our old Integra was the most fun to drive with fabulous Recaro-like seats - but the Hyundai has been a great compact SUV and reliable performer. Plus, it came, as Hondas/Acuras do, with virtually everything on the mid-level model: tinted glass, intermittent wiper, air conditioning, luggage rack, an outrageously good stereo system, etc. etc. The only option I purchased was ABS with traction control, a necessity for a 3800-lb. vehicle - all of which came in well under $20K. Neither the Honda CRV, the Toyota RAV4, nor the Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute could be purchased for anywhere near that price. I'd judge the Hyundai and the Ford to be equal in quality, but Hyundai wins on features for equal price. We plan to replace the Regal next year - we always keep two cars. I'd love half a dozen different cars, ranging from a Mini-S to an Acura MDX to (should I suddenly win the lottery) a Bentley Continental GT. But in terms of return for the money, the best bet will be a used 2005/6 Ford Taurus, when reliability was fairly high and of course, resale-wise it's a steal because nobody wants one any longer. Plus, they don't sell well in San Francisco because the car's simply too big to park anywhere; garages are at a premium around here. I have test-driven the Focus and really like it, but let's face it, a V4 just does not have the pep and durability of the standard Detroit V6. Living in the hills and possessing a "lead foot" makes a V6 the minimum to keep me happy.

DGMarie, I like the picture a lot! I like it's bold rich colors and think it looks great in your living room. I understand you're unwillingness to fool around lowering it, although I think it would look better if it were lowered. The bottom line in your situation is not to think you have to fill the entire space, as that's a huge area. Instead, it's to create a large point of interest area on the mantel. At the moment you have the dark mantel and then the beautiful framed picture above it. But, even though the picture itself is large, the big space between it and the mantel cause it to look like it's floating in space and too small. It's not! You just need to visually connect the two areas and add bulk on either side of the mantel to help. The most important thing, though, is to visually connect that picture to the mantel. Here are a couple of options: * add a long, low, dark basket or decorative box on the mantel below the picture and fill it with greenery. What you're looking for is something visually substantial to tie the picture to the mantel. I'd look for the very realistic greenery and keep it slighly lower than the bottom edge fo the picture. * another idea that I'm using in my own living room is to use a suger mold candle holder to do the same thing. It would have to be a pretty tall one to do the trick, but if you can find one, it might work for you. Here's mine, but see my painting is hung closer to the mantel than yours is, so I could use a regular sized one. See how the things on my mantel connect visually to the painting? I have tall ceilings, although not as tall as yours, and needed a substantial arrangement, so it wouldn't look lost in this space : * another idea would be to add a row of the same objects on the mantel that are darkish in color and substantial enough to visually link the mantel to the picture. Again, keeping them just a bit lower than the bottom edge of the picture. I did this on a much smaller scale with the painting over my chest of drawers in the dining room. I only had to use three votive holders. Of course, you'd have to use something much more substantial for yours, but you get the idea. Lynn

Well I was never able to get any of my sangs to bloom so we'll see about the culebra. I have a bunch of plants on order from Caldwell Nursery and I've gotten loads of cool seeds from Summerhill and Rare Exotic Seeds. I'd have to look at the invoices to remember exactly what I bought.

Congrats on the Brug, Karyn. I started to surf thru E-bay the other day (had said no more ... heh, heh, heh) and sure enough there was a rooted cutting (1) of Madeline up for bid. Not certain if I want to place a bid. Is anyone from this forum on it? Don't want to rain on anyone's parade! I'm trying to force myself to wait till spring and begin buying plants and not cuttings of some of these Brugs!! Don't mind the $$ if I knew they would root. Seems when a Brug has it in mind to root, NOTHING can stop it (toss it on the compost pile, even)but if it is reluctant ... seesh! No amount of TLC can convince it to root! lol. Gloria

Nice Karyn! I am not allowing myself to go on Ebay right now..I went and looked last week and saw an 'Amber Rose' that I am just dying to get..all I did was torture myself by looking. Hopefully I'll be able to find some in the spring, but I'm sure since I want it so badly that there will be non to be found, lol. Snowbank also. argh..just torture.

I'm sorry Linda. Yes I will share. I didn't realize that anyone here was going after those types and figured everyone was just after tctopcat and 7servant7's plants. I was so sick and tired of being outbid on his auctions that I sent him an email asking if he would consider selling one off of Ebay if he had more. He responded and asked what I was offering so I based my offer on the previous auctions of 5" plants and said $20 or $25. He emailed me back and said that they were going for $40-60 which I knew was bs so I didn't respond. It looks like he would have been better off accepting my offer last week. lol

Gloria if you get the Madeline to grow let me know. I've bought 2 sets of cuttings from tctopcat and 5 have died. Most died after they rooted but none ever put out much foliage. I have one hanging on and it has a tiny sprout. I don't know if it's me or the cuttings but I haven't had this problem with any other variety. I've had the cuttings for at least two, maybe three months and they should have a good amount of foliage but that's not the case. At least this one cutting is still alive. These are the plants that I have coming from Caldwell:

Sorry he was so rude about selling you one. 7Servant7 made me a really good deal a while back on some sprecial request cuttings I gave him a list of. He sent me 2 of each of about 5 varieties for $20 including shipping.

That reminds me, I got my snowbank for $9.95 from dogwooderitternet back in September. It lost all it's leaves twice, but considering how well it is doing now, I think it was a good deal.

Karyn: Be glad to share Madeline IF I BID and IF I Win. chased this little Brug all season only to be heavily outbid. I'm hesitant to bid because as you know I haven't had such good cuttings or good luck with the small greenies from this seller this year. And the high bids on this Brug make me wonder if it's worth the risk. But if I do get into it, you'll get a piece! Gloria

Barry Dogwooderitternet is one of my favorite plant sellers. I get a couple big shipments from him every season and have never had a bad plant. His prices are good for healthy starter plants and you can't beat his shipping charges.
