Looks to be correct to me, too. Crassula ovata obliqua. I really enjoy this plant. It is a fast-grower (as far as Jades go), it has a unique trunk color, texture, and bark, and also has hairy nodes! Regarding the 'Hobbit' - yes, most likely the colored tips are a result of nursery/greenhouse growing with higher light levels. Josh

OH, Thank you for your photo. I never see photos of this plant on the forum. Great plant. Do you have or could you take a picture of the base of the plant. So judging from what i see, it will branch from the long stalk next year, or next time, so I should not cut this back too far , unless I want the branching closer to the base. But I will be getting "branching" and not necessarily "Suckering" from the stalk. And I will get blooms on the plant next year. The stalk acts different than the Kalanchoe luciae where after the bloom, most of the plant dies back and it suckers from the base. Is that correct. Do you get suckering from the base. I see some splitting at the base that could become plant shoots. Is this how your plant behaves?

It is always surprising how fast an Aloe on what seems to be the verge of death can recover from under-watering. Taking benign neglect to the extreme by neglecting potting up babies that I cruelly separated from their mothers long ago, I've been accidentally experimenting on how long an aloe can survive without a pot, soil, or water. It's at least a year, and probably more depending on environment. :) I suggest a repot because its currently growing in what looks like peat based soil. Use a mix that is about 75% or more inorganic materials like pumice, perlite, gravel etc. Superior drainage is the goal. You can separate the pups from the Gasteraloe more easily during the repotting when you remove the plant from its container. Leave the very small ones attached to mom because it is harder to survive the few weeks until roots form if the plant is so little that it does not have sufficient water stores. It looks like you have a very puppiferous hybrid clone there. If you do not remove pups, the plant will develop into a large clump. I would change the soil, and move to a pot at least 2-inches bigger than the current container without removing pups right now. Brad

We posted at the same time. =) The red spots are normal! It's colour change response to higher light. It took me a long to figure out. Best example is here from habitat photo, second one down: http://pza.sanbi.org/crassula-perfoliata-var-minor When examined very closely under microscope, the red cells are the same as the green ones. Round and healthy. It is similar to the red circles that Crassula aborescens can get under bright light: http://www.gardensonline.com.au/Uploads/Plant/3727/Crassula-Arborescens-3.jpg The only thing that clued me in was keeping both aborescens and perfoliata side by side to get the similar colour circle pattern.
