How is Your Weather Miss Sherry?

I have asked this question in the past but with the storm heading our way I was wondering how your weather is this morning. Since we need rain so badly I do hope this syspem brings some our way. I worked outside most of yesterday and the ground is so dry. We can do without any tornadoes or high wind but a good soaking would be welcome.

How far are you from Biloxi?

I'm about 35 miles north of Biloxi, Dianne. So far it's just cloudy and a little windy, but the weatherman on WLOX said they're going to have the whole weather crew working on Saturday to "man" today's weather situation - he thinks there may be tornadoes.
I got just under an inch of rain Monday, so I'm not bone dry, but I'm in a rain deficit for the year, and we could sure use some today. But like you said, no tornadoes, please! There were numerous tornadoes that went through this area during the hurricane, in addition to the hurricane force winds, so I've really had enough of serious weather as I know you have!
I'll keep you posted - you do the same, because it'll be moving east.

It looks like my rain has ended. I got 1.75" in a pretty short period of time - it's real wet out there! There were no tornadoes in my immediate area, but there were some in Purvis and around Laurel.
I'll be steering those tornadoes away from you, Dianne! :)

Miss Sherry...thank you for responding. Do hope your Florida trip went well :o) I thought for sure you'd have seen communal roosts...guess that's something we'll all be looking out for now :o) What species of aristolochia do you raise your cats on? Linda...the CBs were reared on a native shrub/tree called fern acacia. We've got gobs of it growing all over the ranch but I only saw caterpillars on the shrubs that were growing by the pond. Susan...those Goatweeds are vibrant! Have you tried putting out butterfly bait? They come quickly to that as well as most rotting fruit - they have a fondness for watermelon out here. Mboston...you are lucky! Do hope you'll be able to spot some Polydamas Swallowtails roosting together and share photos. I've only seen one Polydamas Swallowtail in my yard...and that was about two years ago. I have since planted aristolochia elegans and aristolochia fimbriata in the hopes of attracting them to my yard. Thanks ya'll for responding!!! ~ Cat ps...gotta look into buying a golf cart or ATV for the ranch...can't see much when I'm driving the xterra and I surely don't want to walk through the tall grass this time of year.

Sherry, yes I got it. I'll be answering it in a few moments. It seems many of us who had previously opted to receive email through Garden Web found that our preferences had been changed though no action of our own. I was alerted to this in my own case by a fellow poster. I had forgotten how to edit 'my page' and had to ask and was told to go to the bottom of the opening page of any forum and click on 'Member Services'. Then click on 'Edit My Preferences'. Incidentally I have never received spam or any unwanted email by enabling email to be received through GW. Happy 'butterflying' :-)

Well you guys are lucky you have the cat food for the Spicebush Swallowtail right in the back yard. I don't have any Spicebush or Sassafras here. That little grove of Sassafras by the stream which had such tender foliage is about a 20 minute hike away - so going out to get cuttings fresh every day wasn't possible. When raising a lot of Monarchs at one time, I usually have to collect additional Asclepias syriaca from the "milkweed field" which is also about 20 minutes away. I use the same florist tube and ziploc bag method for those and keep them in the fridge, which keeps the large stalks of A. syriaca pretty fresh too.

I well remember Elena, Mary, because it's the only hurricane where I saw the eye. We were living in Gulfport, and when the wind stopped, I went outside, and it looked like we were in a domed stadium of clouds with a little hole in the top - very weird. Hancock County has MUCH flooding, both from the Gulf and rainfall, but I'm not sure of the particulars, just that it wasn't nearly what Katrina was. We have friends who live in the Kiln, and the creek that's pretty close to their house that surprisingly flooded it, didn't flood it this time - they were SO relieved! Hancock County probably got between 15" and 20" of rain, Harrison County got between 10" and 15" and Jackson County got 15" - 20" of rain. There was a tornado in Gulfport that damaged a few homes. There were two tornadoes in Jackson County, one that tore up a home in Pascagoula and one in Ocean Springs that people heard and saw tearing a roof off a home. The OS tornado was on North Washington Ave. Somebody got a home video of one of the Jackson County tornadoes, the first of a hurricane related tornado I've ever seen, and it didn't look as menacing as the ones you see on TV in Oklahoma and Alabama, but if you were under it, and it damaged your home, I'm sure it was awful. The beach road in OS was badly damaged. There was some flooding of homes near creeks and/or rivers in the northern and central part of Jackson County. Still, it was nothing compared to Katrina. My finger is still swollen, not as bad as yesterday, but now it's itching! :( Thanks for the info about the bees and hurricanes - they act weirdly crazed!! Sherry

We have been waiting for some rain all day in Southeast AL but the weather man says the front was going a bit north of us. I think the front has moved into AL now so maybe you got rain in your area Mimidi.

Nada. I am west of Dothan and so far there has been no rain in our area. From the looks of the Weather Channel map it is still west of us in Monroeville.

Miss Sherry thanks for steering the tonadoes away from our area. Just want some of the wet stuff.

We had tons of rain the past days here in Fort Payne area..

We have had more spring rain in Oklahoma City than I recall ever having - well, at least in a very long time. We need it, and our area has finally had the drought warning lifted that has been in effect since 2005! Yeah!

I hope the subsoil will be wet enough that if we have a summer without rain, it won't be as bad as last year.

One thing, though - it does make it difficult to get out and work in the soil.

No tornadoes last night but plenty of wind and and l.50 inches of rain. Colder and still real windy. I have seen my hummingbirds this morning but no butterflies. They have have found themselves a hidey hole somewhere.

I got another .10" of rain when the actual front came through later yesterday. Boy is it windy! And much cooler!
