In this area, wild black cherry does grow in full sun, and it gets real big, though not as big as oaks or pines. You don't find it growing under the really big trees in the woods - it's more of a woodland pioneer tree, like persimmon, sweetgum, red maple, oak and pine, not an understory tree, at least here. Understory trees in my woods are dogwoods, ptelela trifoliata, silverbells, sourwood, etc. Your cherry shouldn't be chlorotic, unless it's a problem with your soil - Okalhoma and Texas (and most western) soils are different than those in the east, with a much higher PH usually, for one thing, and there are probably a lot more differences.
I think you should contact your county agent and send off a soil sample to get the analysis of it, so your county agent can advise you on the best way to treat it. It may be that WBC isn't suitable for most OK soils. Tiger swallowtails use a LOT of different host trees, so maybe you could find out what they prefer in your area and plant that. I hope you correct the problem with your cherry tree, but, if it doesn't thrive, there's probably something else the tigers would use.

Cool! That will be my next butterfly project. Getting more host plants closer to the house for them.

I see them throughout the summer here though, so there must be something they like close by. Just don't know what it is.

Miss Sherry, Marilyn lists the WBC as part sun here, so perhaps it is because of our extreme heat. I do need to get a soil sample to see what it is lacking in. Aside from being chloratic, it has really grown the last 3 years, and looks otherwise healthy. Thanks for the suggestions. :)

Randy, I would dearly love to find out what the Tigers are using in our area. Cottonwoods would be my guess. That would explain why we never get to find the cats. I am planning on getting one of Marilyn's Mexican plums trees, Saturday. She says that she ALWAYS finds Tiger cats on them. Unfortunately, they are a morning sun tree, also. I am really limited on my morning sun areas. But, I am going to try!!! You may want to consider a wild black cherry and Mexican plum from Marilyn.

Hmm, There are 3 massive cottonwoods on each border on the south end of the property along the creek.

This very old Mexican plum is in the yard. Took this a few weeks ago when it was in full bloom.

There may be 20 more bordering the pasture to the north in sight of our yard. The one in the yard gets morning and late afternoon shade. The ones along the pasture are pretty good sized and they get no shade at all.

Guess I need to go see if there are any cats on it. :-)

Yes, Linda, the extreme summer heat in OK could make wild cherry a part sun tree there - our high daytime summer temps are usually 10 cooler than they are in OK.

I visited with Marilyn today, and she says that she has found Tiger cats on her Mexican plum, but has found most of them on her smaller Tulip poplars. Do you have any of them?

Marilyn said that they are bringing 2 vehicles full of plants. I had forgotten that it is an "indoor" Market. I will be a blond lady in purple talking Butterfly plants!

Linda, Congrats on that wonderful find! I bet there will be more in your future too. I wonder what was wrong that you had trouble getting the Tiger cats to hatch in the past? I'm sorry but I don't know what to tell you about the tree. The best of luck to you!

So far, my little seedlings are happily growing and putting on new growth (do they have pink flowers?) and I'm growing them in pots with potting soil.

Don't know that this helps. They apparently like alkaline soil, not acid, from what I read on Plants for a Future Database. However, too much alkalinity in the soil can cause problems, too. I doubt that your pine needles are adding that much acid to the soil, though. They can be susceptible to honey fungus, too.
