buddleia davdii brown leaves

I bought a buddleia davidii in a 7 inches pot. It was about 3 feet high and in stable condition. i transplanted it in my soil bed few weeks ago. Temp is around 100F here and it will reach around 125F in May. First, the edges of some mostly upper and some lower leaves turned brown. Then whole upper leaves turned brown and curled/crispy. The nursery man told me that roots of this plant must remain cool and well drained. I am sure about well drained but not about being cool. I have got few options for mulching. Peat moss, coco peat, shredded leaves etc. Any clue?

For the buddleias to get started, they need lots of moisture. I mulch mine with pine bark. I am wondering if it might not have done better in your environment if it was planted in the late winter-early spring. It sounds like the leaves are cooking.

Of the mulches you listed, I'd use lots and lots of shredded leaves. Your plant can lose all its leaves and still be alive. To water, make a trench about a foot away from the plant all the way around the plant. Water in this trench and let drain. Keep mulch away from trunk, but use it liberally around the plant out to about 18 inches or more, including the trench. I would put about 4 inches of mulch around the plant.

Good luck. I don't know if buddleia is suited to temps of 125 degrees.

THE PROBLEM IS THE SOIL TEMPERATURE, TO LOWER IT,
MIX HAY WITH THE ITS TUBES WILL RETAIN WATER FOR A LONGER PERIOD, REDUCING SOIL TEMPERATURE

Spider mites lurve them some buddleia, particularly if it's good and drought stressed. I've been able to control SMs on buddleia by (1) making sure the plant itself gets appropriate irrigation and (2) hosing it off daily with a pretty good spray of water, being careful to hit the underside of the leaves, for a week or 10 days. That seems to interrupt the lifecycle of the SMs and they'll remain at a managable dull roar if you make sure the plant gets enough water.

MM Thanks for responding. The damage on the picture you linked to does look like the one I posted, sort of "end stage" but it actually starts out with tiny brown spots which is whats going on now. Yesterday I saw some tiny red bugs, which seem to be the juvenile version of the one I see later.

They are just in normal garden soil (mine is a little heavy and clay-like, but it's not waterlogged at all). Both plants (affected and unaffected) are in the same soil, only a few feet apart. The soil smells okay, no plant food used, afternoon sun only (not that hot in my part of the world (UK)). Here's a photo of a tip of a shoot that has grown from a longer shoot which had the problem a month or so ago (as outlined in my first message) - you'll see that the problem is also present on this new shoot: http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g319/Dalek99999/P7301230.jpg This will also eventually turn completely brown and die, just like the others did a while back.

butterflymomok, you mean dig a trench of 1 foot around the plant, water the trench throughly and then fill it with shredded leaves, right?

If i can provide shade and mulch, should i move it to a bigger clay pot till temp cools down in september?

Sounds like a good idea. Once the plant gets established without the stress of the high heat, it will better be able to survive.
