Not me; life is too short, LOL! Takes over a year for anything to show above ground, and something like 4 or 5 years for the first flower. Makes the high cost of a plant more understandable.

I have a red tree peony that gets lots of seeds. I harvest some for trading, because some people really like a challenge. But 5 years is just too long for me to wait for a flower.

I haven't tried, for the reasons that Lois lists, but I sure have been thinking about doing it for quite some time now. I planted a couple of peonies in my Mom's garden about 10 years ago; this was the first year I actually got to see them bloom.

I definitely dont have the patience for that. Lucky, I got some tubers (or whatever they're called) from my dad's neighbor.

Tiffy, they are there on Clothiers, he's got the tree type lumped in with perennials....paeonia.

But he doesn't have a lot to say about them :) Warm cold cool germinators, no cheating. I've sown them in winter and had them take 15 months to germinate, sown in Fall they will usually germinate the following Spring....keep in mind my experience is here in my own climate, pots will be cold over winter but will freeze only very briefly.

Druse, Making More Plants - outdoors when fresh (so late summer, early fall) or sow fresh seed 90 days moist warm, followed by 90 days moist cold, after which germination may begin in as many as 270 days at 60-70F.

I've sown paeonia ludlowii (yellow tree form), had those germinate, and I've waited 6 yrs for blooms....granted, that's a long wait but the shrub isn't that bad for foliage in the meantime. Now I rarely bother sowing, my shrub/tree will volunteer a few seedlings every year for me to pot up.

Wow, yellow Peony flowers that must be awesome! I would give it a try, even if it will take years to see what kind of flowers you will get from a seedling.

Five years to flower wouldn't put me off, it sounds like such a long time, but it's surprising how fast the years go by. I winter-sowed 2 lovely little Flowering Dogwood trees this year, and it will probably be 5-10 years before these will flower. The Trumpet vine will take at least 5 years to flower. My Baptisia is 3 years old - no flowers yet either. Growing stuff from seed is fun, even when it's slow. Sometimes it's nice to just go buy a plant at the nursery though and get instant gratification. :)

Geeezzz. I didn't think it would take that long. :O) But you are right Terrene - it is surprising how fast the years go by so I just might take those tiny seeds and sow them this week. I have an area where I could just forget about them for a while.

I have waited patiently for other things, so why not this. I'll also make it one of those things that 'if it makes it, great, if not, then that's OK too'.

I ws tree peony seeds last year after a warm period inside. No germination yet. Will keep the container another year.

Yesterday when I was cutting back my peonies I came across a lone flower that I had missed (cutting) which had gone to seed. I looked at it for a long time, took them up to the deck and then,thinking they might be sterile, I tossed them. Perhaps I should have tried growing them, just to see what the results might have been. Maybe next year.

After reading this post, I did a little investigating and found this site which gives detailed instructions for starting the seeds indoors and outdoors. And yes,5-7 years is the norms for blooms.

I'm almost 50, like my OGR's can't wait. 5 years, but they are beautiful!

I have my Tree Peony seeds tucked in a corner of the unheated greenhouse....will wait and see. Last years pots with tree Peony seeds were tossed when i cleaned out the greenhouse, might have a surprise growing somewhere, lol.

I think everyone should have peonies.

Ladyrose, what is an OGR? I am 51, and trying to grow trees that may take 10+ years to bloom (let alone 2 years to germinate). The way I look at it, no one knows how much time they have, so if I croak before some of these bloom, hopefully someone else will enjoy them. :)

Terrene, OGR's are Old Garden Roses. They take about 2-seasons to put out blooms. I'm really adamant about planting them in the Fall, so I can speed up a year.
