Another of the very fragrant flowering species; T. humilis with it's one-of-a-kind coloration

A very small species, T. castellanii, with an almost pure black and purple inflo.

...and another plant of T. humilis showing some vigorous rooting

Beaut little plants there Nev. I'm not too familiar with alot of Tills as yet (just beginning to appreciate them) so nice to be introduced to a few new ones. Thanks

I have a very long and narrow garden, along a treeline. It's the only sunny area I have. In one season, roots from the trees find there way back into my garden beds. I till periodically to break up and remove the tree roots. It's sort of a pain, as my garden has become 4-season. I have been thinking about renting a ditchwitch, and just running it all along the back edge of the garden to sever all the new roots. I've even considered trying to figure out some kind of barrier to put in the trench a ditchwitch would leave. I thought I could get around the root problem by just building a raised soiless bed. I left it up for one season, but had to dismantle it due to my poor planning of it's location. Tree roots had worked there way up from the bottom, and had completely filled the box to within a few inches of the top. I had to use a tiller just to break it up, it was susc a solid root mass. The same thing happened to my experiments with lasagne beds, and if I get lazy and don't turn my compost pile regularly, the same thing happens there. My tilled beds definitely have fewer tree roots, and better production (as an experiment, I put in a standard lasagne bed right next to a tilled bed to which I added the same ammendments, and the tilled bed was amazingly more productive). Anybody have any suggestions? I really really want to be no till! Cheers! JP

"I think Dave missed his calling and should have gone into landscape design". I have no experience in landscape design. Just common sense as to how things should look. Most people that visit my garden don't have a clue as to what's involved to achieve this look. They want to hire you to achieve the same results for them They want the look and they want in right now. That is the way things are today. It takes years to put together something unique as opposed to buying nursery plants thrown in a hole surrounded by river rock. To get it right it needs to be done by you. Every move and look has your personally in it. A lot of times you don't get it right the first time and as things evolve tear outs and re-dos are the norm. Plant selection takes time, sometimes years, to fine the right look you are after. Add rock, bricks, flag stone to tie it together and all of a sudden you look back and 10 years have gone by. I should have taken notes day by day as this thing developed. A wealth of knowledge transferred to paper on how to succeed in something you know nothing about. It's been interesting and as I look out the window I am at peace looking at all of Gods plants. The possibilities are endless for the garden of your dreams with all the plant material out there. Thanks, Richard. I think maybe you can erase the "???". I have two pots of Haworthia cooperi. One is labeled Haworthia cooperi v kubusiedrif (1) and the other is H. cooperi v cooperi (2). The first one I received from Steve Hammer and the second from Miles Anderson. I also have several of this one I received from a friend and labeled as H. cooperi but sometimes I question if the name is correct.

Thank you all for commenting! The foxgloves have naturally re-seeded from year to year. I thought I had lost the 'babies' from last season (which bloom the second year) due to the extreme drought. They were late coming up in the spring but all the rain got them growing like crazy. Apparently they love my soil since I don't have to do anything to encourage them. The eremerus (foxtail lily) are a little more complicated. They have to be mulched here in the fall for survival and don't like high winds which I sometimes get here on the mountain. But for anyone who has deer, rodent or rabbit issues, these and alliums are the perfect plant. Nothing eats them! Maryl, sorry you have lost so many roses. I have downsized considerably from my 'rose-crazy' days. I remember being so infatuated with roses until the scourge of the Japanese beetles. I get about 2 weeks of utter beauty until they arrive and then they look like shredded toilet tissue. That's why I no longer frequent the rose forum and hang out here......daylilies are so much more rewarding!

Ha ha. Cool plants Gonzer. That is a really wild coloration of those petals. Where is humilis from? Is it a tall spike (can you give a shot of the whole plant that is blooming)?

Do you grow all your tillies on cork?

I've gotta go and look at my tillies now (I wish), but I don't know where to look as I don't grown them, they must be hiding somewhere ha! ha!

Oh, sure Nev...come in and take all the credit! (humor in disguise) ;-P
Most of the plants are on cork, the rest are potted or hanging. I've taken to wearing prescription safety glasses 'cause I'm always either bumping my melon or getting poked in the eyes by the hanging ones.

Lovely macro shots, incognito-bag-head-Gonz. I too am impressed with the colour of that humilis flower, and the great contrast of that deep purple/black developing inflo against the silver leaves on your T. castellanii.
