Butterfly Garden

is this cudweed? and my first attempts at....

photographing butterfly visitor.

saw an earlier post about cudweed and sure enough came across

this plant as i was weeding my canna beds. is this cudweed?

also waited with my camera in hand and within a few minutes had a gulf frittilary come to feed on my plants. next time i will change camera setting to action shot to see if butterfly will come out clearer. it sure is hard to photograph these critters. they sure are quick.

Fern, that's cudweed - the narrow leaves make me think it's either gnaphalium obtusifolium/rabbit tobacco or g. falcatum. The type that grows here is g. pensylvanicum or g. purpureum var. spathulatum, etc. - the scientists have given it many names over the years. There is a lot of confusion out there as to what's what, because one of my books shows a picture of my type cudweed and calls it g. falcatum. After looking at many sources, I think my type - the type I showed on the thread - is indeed g. pensylvanicum. Based on the way the flowers look, I'd say yours is most likely g. falcatum, which grows throughout Florida, but I can't see them well enough to be sure it's not g. obtusifolium, which also grows throughout Florida and here as well.
Regardless, they're all host plants for American ladies, and yours is definitely that.

Thanks for all your kind words. I am just getting into this and love it. My imagination runs wild all day thinking of projects to do.....just not enough time in a day (or experience yet) as far as staining, painting and texturing, that is coming soon. I have decided to do a project that might take a little while, new pictures posted on my site (webshots). I am thinking of a big basin with a molting volcano in the middle with water bubbling out of the center and red led lights to give it a real volcano look. So far I have started on the volcano. Steve, They look good. I bet you will get a crop before frost. One way to train a squash/pumpkin is simply to move the vines where you want them to go, as they grow. Also, when the vines get really large and begin to invade part of the garden, where you don't want them to go, you can either pinch out the growing tip, whenever it heads into that area, or perhaps better, simply lift the vines and flip them back upon the plant and away from where you don't want them to go. This works well. Unless you are very pinched for space I wouldn't bother with trellising. Most squash and pumpkins require a sling type of support for any fruit suspended by a trellis, in order to prevent it from tearing off the vine when it gets heavy. If you opt to do this, I hear that old nylons work well for slings. George Tahlequah, OK

pretty sure that was the last pic I added, It's gone no where since then really. All I've done is finish that white wave pattern around the edge. Temps are now regularly too cold for thinset now and I'll probably not get anything else on it till spring. But that could mean different colors might happen to magically arrive before I start again. Right now, I think I'll need more of the white to do the ginkgo leaves as it is. then I worry that 2 sheets of the orangish swirlly glass might not be enough for infill

Good for you! I've never done it by myself-always in a group. Figure my voice will just blend in. I honestly don't know why singing in front of people is such a scary thing, but it is for me!! My voice isn't awful-wouldn't break any mirrors, but it's terrifying to think of. And I have seen many a person up there singing who is AWFUL, but hey they are having fun so who cares!
