Ok..dont laugh, my first attempt of....

I have been reading this forum for a few weeks and decided to try my hand at hypertufa, so I mixed up some stuff that was laying around the house (don't laugh to hard). I am very interested in making alot of different hypertufa pieces and will go at it slowly, reading and learning. I saw some of the work posted on here and almost didn't want to put my pictures out for everyone to see, but want people to see my work (hopefully improvement) as I learn and get better at it. Believe me, I am not quiting my day job....yet :) Well, anyway, there will be more pictures to come with each new project.

I'm a newbie right with you. Here is a link I've found recently that I found very helpful. The pictures are good the wording is concise. There's a list of recipes and additives that'll get us started. Just found it today and I've got my shopping list ready for tomorrow!

Hi Planto.. These pots are funny! They are 1/4 of the weight of a terra cotta the same size. lol.. Yes, I am lucky we share hobby's! He's an only child, so at times it was hard to keep him busy. lol. From the time he could crawl, we worked the garden together, he has helped hand raise birds, crafts of all kinds, he's currently learning and enjoying working with polymer clay! I'm one who has always been strict and limited video games. there's so much more to life! Next month we will be joining our local Cactus and succulent club! I can hardly wait!

Oy vey my seasons are terribly off this year! After having a baby I didn't do too much gardening, aside from a ladder I covered with morning glories. I planted some bulbs that didn't do a whole lot but hopefully will next year. Kathi - Thank you so much! The foxgloves seem to do really well here. The original plants are about bloomed out and I don't expect them to return next year. They have reseeded all over though and this spring I think had about 11 babies that bloomed from that original three foxgloves I planted. They are all white though, but I adore foxgloves and welcome any color baby that decides to grow in my garden. :) pippi - So sorry for taking literally MONTHS to respond! I have a now six month old that I pretty much devoted the summer to. Now it's fall and my mind is turning to winter sowing and I'm hoping to find the time to garden more next year. I have a 9 year old who will have to babysit so Mom can get some gardening done. Here it gets a bit too cold to plant seeds in the fall for next spring, but I do summer sow and plant small plants that go dormant and return larger the following year. All of the foxgloves except for one that I have now were sale plants I purchased from Walmart for a couple bucks after they were done. They returned beautifully, though I doubt those original plants will come back next year. They did leave lots of babies and I'm thrilled with that! I agree the yellow yarrow is pretty aggressive, actually ALL of the yarrow I have is pretty hardy and aggressive but managable. I love it and have divided it and put it all around my house and barns. Memo - Thank you so much! I am working on it. The Dames Rocket grows as a weed out here and my Mom sort of laughed at me when I actually PAID for it and put it in my garden!!! LOL* It is gorgeous though and one of my favorite things. I did not return this spring, I'm sad to say! It was outdone by some overzealous daisies and rudbeckia that I will be thinning out next spring. The goosneck while pretty is a real nightmare and I'm planning on pulling out all of that next year too.

bettyd, I think your arrangement looks wonderful! I've never tried stacked plates and hope my first attempt looks half as good. About your camera; I like the warm colors of the third picture best. When I got my first digital camera a couple years ago I would look at my finished pictures on the computer (kind of hard to see all the detail just on the camera's lcd). If I would take a shot like you did, several times in several different ways my computer would give me information when I ran the mouse over the thumbnail picture (such as flash or different icons for other settings I used). Hope I'm not confusing you. There are so many different brands of cameras out there. You have to figure out your own, but it is so much fun in the process. My friends laugh at me because I take pictures of everything! But then, when there's a "good" opportunity I feel like I have practised and am familiar with my camera.

Welcome welcome Daisydal!! Oh no you don't. You belong here now so don't try to go away again!! ha You did an awesome job on the door! I hardly ever do anything freehand (always use patterns) so I really enjoy seeing freehand work. I'm amazed that people can see something in their head and just paint it. What girl wouldn't love that door?? I bet she feels like she is looking thru glass into a fun sunshiney world. Love the faux wood and all the little fun things you added to it. Your first pieces are good, nothing to laugh at, you should have seen some of my first attempts! Don't forget to take a look at the FAQ section at the top of the main forum page - some good advice there. It helped me a lot when I started.

JUST FANTASTIC!! I applaud your first efforts. Wasn't that FUN to do? Just love that faux rock one as well. I wonder if you have tried texturing any of your pieces with a stiff bristle brush? Just after it hardens nicely, go at it with a brush and see if you like that effect. Please keep tufa-ing!! You are a natural at it.

Richlyn71, The piece with the blue and green glass is really an unusual plant stand, too cool. Are you going to paint or stain any of your pieces? I use a wire brush to texture the outside of some of my pieces like Marly was talking about but I leave some smooth like you did in Pic #3. I also like to stencil and rubber stamp so I leave the sides smooth. Nice pieces, you did a great job. Billie

a few freeform pots

first 2 crumbled like dry cheese..lol

Now that i know what i did wrong im gonna work on some this weekend...gonna ruin some ceramic molds too.......might as well go for it.....

Thanks for all your kind words. I am just getting into this and love it. My imagination runs wild all day thinking of projects to do.....just not enough time in a day (or experience yet) as far as staining, painting and texturing, that is coming soon. I have decided to do a project that might take a little while, new pictures posted on my site (webshots). I am thinking of a big basin with a molting volcano in the middle with water bubbling out of the center and red led lights to give it a real volcano look. So far I have started on the volcano. I will start on the basin next week. The whole thing should be about 25" wide by 25" tall. Hope it works as planned.

Welcome. Your projects are very nice. Nothing to laugh at. Some of my first projects looled just like gray cowflops. I have kept them all these years and no matter how often I look at them I still see cowflops.
