Exceptionally grown plants, too, Howard - TFS lucithrysifolia grown text-book. They must use lights, no? Those are plants you'd be lucky to have in a landscape grown that well (where they grow best)....or so I thought until I saw these ones. Great looking plants!

I thought it was luciae, also. I have seen them grown here in Florida, in the ground, that big. All the babies that will come from that plant!

In the interest of public sanity and wanting to see more plants in flower, please name the nursery. There's nothing wrong with writing where you took the pictures, after all, it's advocating that is the problem I think you're concerned about.

Sorry for being cautious. It's just I've had some unpleasant experiences with other forums for "bending" the rules and didn't want to go through all of that again.

Bordine's Nursery is located in Rochester, Michigan. They have other locations in neighboring areas but the Rochester location is their main place of business. As I said, their primary business focus are annuals, perennials and larger landscaping material like oak trees and pine, etc. They will have several large tables of assorted cactus and succulents beginning in early spring and usually receive additional shipments in late summer. These are some of the plants I purchased from them this summer. They are in 6" pots and originally sold for about $15.00 but were on sale for $12.00... thought it was a pretty good deal. Most people in this area don't much care for them as the store still has lots for sale!

Ah ha, I know Bordine's well. I should have recognized the greenhouse. (At first I thought it might be Wiegan's.) I use their bark mulch in my mix - good stuff and cheaper than other routes. Al recommended it.

It's a bit of a drive for me - 20-30 mins, but I get up there several times a year. Right now I'm visiting nurseries just to shake off the winter blues. I see a short road trip in my future.

Monet, where are you in Michigan? Bordine's is more than a 20 ~ 30 min drive for me and Wiegan's is like taking an overnight trip! The bark mulch you mentioned is from which vendor, B or W ? What other Michigan "Hot Spots" do you frequent? I visit Jim at Roseacres in Charlotte and John at The Root System in the Jackson area. At this time of year, you absolutely must call before your visit.

I'm in Birmingham. I've gotten tired of the big nurseries that bring seasonal stock in and out, but I do go to "English Gardens" to get a quick fix. "Telly's" is fairly close to the Bordine's you mentioned (on John R between 16 and 17 mile.) It started as a small family business, but has done well (if that can be judged by the price increases year after year). "WoJo's" might not be too far from you (on 24 off of I-69 - Lapeer area).

I do search out old family businesses of which there aren't too many. There's "Young's" in Warren - small shop, but when searching though their greenhouse you might find a real gem. Saw some nice crassulas including a "Tricolor" and bought this epiphyllum the other day.

Probably not too impressive to most people, but these are impossible to find in this area.

The bark is at Bordines's. This is a quote from Al - "...you can (at least last year you could) get GREAT PBFs at any of the Bordine's locations. Clear bag - blue label w/white lettering that says "Royal Gardens Landscape Mulch). It's great for the 5:1:1 as is, and you can easily screen it and get a high % of usable product for the gritty mix."

But, no, my main collection consists of Clivia - often much to my chagrin, but when it when I get a full umbel of blooms - Oh, Baby!!!

Woo! Your Echeveria buys from there are beautiful. Darn good place for special finds, in my eyes.

Well here is an update of some pictures.. I had to be in Rochester today and stopped by and snapped these. It seems I was told or read that once these flower the main plant dies and the small plants root and do it all over again. Can anyone substantiate this for me? I'd hate to pay lots of money for one of these only to have the larger plant die!

Thanks for additional pix, Howard! Flowers confirm, as Geoff & Greta said, they are K. luciae. Sorry to say I cannot recall what mine did after flowering-if that stem died. I had other pups, so did not notice.

As far as I know, it will die off after flowering.
