OT: We just had a small 4.2 earthquake.

Few minutes ago we had a small earthquake. Everything is OK,no damages. I did not feel it :-)). I was washing dishes in the kitchen when my husband came to me and asked if I felt it. Thanks GOD I did not felt it and save me for scare.

Phenixk- Can't believe I came across your post. We are considering using Dorado(now Phildadelpia) Soapstone for a soapstone countertop and were wondering if it was a good choice. There is another company in the area that also sounds good, but as you said, Joe and Andy have been great to talk with so far. I am still trying to decide what to do-soapstone (?) or not, and would love to see a countertop that has been used in someone's home to see if it holds up as well as they say it does. How long have you had yours? Are you pleased with the wear, etc.? Also, I really like the idea of the lighter gray color, but I am not sure if it would stay that way (without oiling it) like they say, and look good. Our other option is to use 12 x 12 retified porcelian tiles. I want a primitive country look since I have a house full of antiques.

Glad to hear from you - hope you and your kitties are OK. I'm on the opposite coast, but had relatives in Santa Monica for a while. A 3.4 hit while I was there once. Don't know where the epicenter was, but it sure was scary to me. I have never heard so much noise from so much quiet. There was an strange silence that just didn't seem right, afterward. My cousin lived on the top floor of a a 7 story condo bldg, right next to the highway - I think the 5. I saw a VW and a semi drive by, but I kept hearing a strang noise - like a lot of cars were driving by. Then, the silence. I love your state and would love to live there. But, the quakes would drive me nuts. Hope that's the last one - or at least not an immediate forecast. Stay safe!!

Earthquakes on the east coast are rare except for a few locations. Last century, Charleston, SC, was destroyed by an earthqauke. It is believed this quake was centered, not under Charleston, but near the continental shelf which is some distance east of Charleston in the sea. In the winter of 1811 - 1812, 3 huge earthquakes,and numerous aftershocks, centered at New Madrid, MO, was felt all over the eastern US, of course, the farther away, the weaker the effect. It rang church bells in Boston. Look on a map of west Tennessee, paralleling the Mississippi River to find Linfoot Lake. This lake was created during that great shake. It is a slump zone that filled with water. The St. Lawrence River flows in a major fault line out to sea. Several quakes in the neighborhood of Richter Magnitude 4.0 have been reported over the past 100 years. This is an active fault, although not to the degree of the infamous San Andreas on the west coast. The San Andreas fault marks the edge of the pacific plate and is a very long fault.

Oh, Daisy - I LOVE that picture of your steps with the little bunch of daffodils (or are they narcissi/jonquils? Sorry, I don't know the difference!) - on each step. Just stunning! I used to live in the UK and I remember the daffodils everywhere in spring - I especially loved seeing a whole meadow of them, sort of "growing wild" in the local parks (I don't know if they were or probably carefully planted by the park gardeners - haha!). I can also relate to your feelings of wistfulness - I used to live in Oxford and had all those romantic, beautiful Cotswolds English gardens on my doorstep that I never really paid much attention to - and now I live in hot, dry Australia and desperately want an English cottage garden (and am trying to create one, even though everybody local tells me its a lost cause and will only lead to heartache eventually!). Argh! I wish I'd appreciated all those gorgeous gardens I had access to when I was still living in England - can you believe that I never even went to the Chelsea Flower Show? I'm kicking myself now!! :-) ~ HY

Glad you missed it..LOL When I lived in SC we had an earthquake and I thought the guys down stairs blew up their oven or something.. I didn't know it was a quake till I saw the news..

In 1987 I was sitting at my desk in Whittier, when the earthquake hit with a magnitude of 5.9
The cabinets on the walls broke off, I couldn't get up at all, shaking so much, and right next to my chair the floor openend up starting behind me, to all the way across the alley in front of the building.
Later, when everything got fixed, they referred to the gap next to my desk as "Ingrid's Fault".

that all sounds really scary! glad everything's okay!

and also, that's incredibly terrifying and I feel like it's inappropriate, but something about referring to the hole as "ingrid's fault" made me smile :P

Karyn, I am soooo scared of earthquakes. I felt 2 big ones ...first one in Romania a 7.5. It was about 32y.ago. It happened at 10 pm and if I would have been home and in bed I would probably have died. Part of the wall where my headboard was, fell on my pillow. I was young and I did not went to bed so early LOL. I was at some friends house when it hit and I did not know what happened. In the beginning I thought a war started. A friend of mine was begging me to run outside but I could not move. I was parallelized. I was like in a trance and I was picturing a house I've seen in a movie who was shaking and than fell. In that moment I realized that the house might fell and I ran outside. I could not see anything just a lot of dust everywhere, bricks and building material falling around me. It was a miracle I was not hit. It was a lot of damages, lots of tall buildings( 10 stories) fell to the ground and thousands of people died .I can not tell you the terror I went through until I located my parents ,my sisters and brother. We were living in different parts of the city. There was no light, no telephone or transportation working. We reunite sometimes during the night. Thanks God we were all alive, not hurt just scared.

The second big one (about 7) was in California about 20y ago when I was 3 month pregnant. I was in a supermarket paying for my groceries when it hit. This time I knew better and I ran out as fast as I could. Lucky me I was not through the aisles to be hit by falling products and selves .I was closed to the door and avoided the crowd. Another big thanks to God that my pregnancy was not affected.

The smallest earthquake scares me to death.

Ingrid, glad there was no damage. Earthquakes are scary because they happen so quickly. They are usually only a couple of seconds long, but when you are in one, it seems like they go on forever. Years ago, my youngest brother was visiting from out-of-state when we had an earthquake. He has never been back to California as a result!

Pat, you have reason for your fear, from your previous experiences, especially in Romania. I hope your fear fades with time. You are in the wrong state to avoid earthquakes, tho! Glad it was a little one and that you are safe.
Ingrid, that is too funny about Ingrid's Fault, but under very scary circumstances!
