What's wrong with this Brug -anybody's 2 cents?

Hi-

I have numerous named brug cuttings growing on a 16' heating mat in my cool basement- I came across this NHDP cutting with strange markings on the leaves- but no bugs seen. Can anyone give me a clue on what it is? Also, here are some photos of my basement brugs cuttings, they're starting to leaf out & are getting root bound, ready for transplanting.

I'm guessing a calcium or magnesium deficiency. I doubt that it's a mosaic virus but I would move it away from the other plants to be on the safe side. I'd give it a dose of Cal-Mag Plus or Epsom Salts and see if that helps.

Well, I already had two stamps on it and I asked the clerk to check to see if I had enough postage on it. He said no even before he weighed it. He said it was a parcel. I said apparently you didn't get the memo. He said I go by what my book tells me and proceeded to read me the same old stuff they always tried to go by. I said I know all that stuff already and this memo says that it is wrong. He said that he would have to talk to his supervisor and then continued to try and tell me that if it varied in thickness by more than 1/4" it was a parcel. I read him the requirements from the memo and told him that he needed to get the supervisor for me. Finally he got the supervisor and the supervisor read the post that you put on here and said, "Yes, that's right." He told the clerk that it should be a large envelope and the clerk was still babbling on about the 1/4" difference in size. The supervisor said that from now on cushion mailers under 3/4" in thickness would go as a large envelope. I asked him if he would like to keep the post and he said no that he would print out the memo and make sure that everyone understood it. I don't think that they were any to happy. I had to pay an extra penny in addition to the stamps that I already had on it but that's better than $1.13. Hopefully that battle is won but I'm keeping the post with me when I go back.

Hogwash... clay is not a catch-all to blame problems on. Clay might be a PITA to work with, but clay is also nutrient-rich. Peat will keep the moisture in - which can be good and bad. Brugs don't like "wet feet". Peat is also very acidic. Brug roots are more than capable of working through clay, in fact, they are one of the better plants for breaking up clay soil. If pests have been eliminated as a non-issue - not eating the plant - the first thing that struck me in looking at those leaves is that the foliage is roasting/baking. Little tip I picked up from someone I consider a Brug Guru - generally the lighter the bloom colour, the less sun tolerant. I had a B. suaveolens 'White' in full sun along with all of my others last year - ran a trial on it, since everyone preached "full sun" on Brugs to me - and I dang near lost every specimen. Full sun my butt - not here, and I'd say after living in TX, definitely not in Texas! I had people preach "morning sun, afternoon shade" to me too - but the best that I found for my Brugs was morning shade, afternoon sun - and the lighter the bloom colour - the more shade they get. I keep the B. suaveolens 'White', for instance, in dappled shade beneath some Oak trees and it thrives there. So, what - if any - differences in sunlight and exposure and time of day between where this scorched looking one and the others you have that seem fine? And are they the same cultivar or different cultivars?

Have you been feeding them? It might be a mineral deficiency, magnesium and or calcium. It's also normal for the older lower leaves to yellow and drop, especially this time of year. Some might just be dropping naturally but there's definitely something not right. I have a feeling it's a deficiency of some type but see what others say. If it is a deficiency there's a product called CalMag Plus that works very well or you can just try Epsom Salts.

How did the county know the property was split, wouldn't they require a copy of the plat showing the now two pieces of property? The county doesn't look at the plat. It uses the legal description in the deed. Without a deed or a court order, the property doesn't transfer. Surveys aren't always done, and when done, aren't always recorded. Locals rules may vary on this, of course. Someone wrote a legal description of the property to be split off. If it wasn't taken from a survey, the description may be faulty. You can have a faulty legal description corrected, but it is an extra step, and someone may contest it. BTW, if there is no current survey, the title insurance you receive will not cover boundary disputes.

I think it is nutrient deficiency as well. Try what Karyn said, you could add a touch of Boron too if you have it.

Wow Pretty babies!!I know nothing about brugs except that they are pretty and they bloom also they are not cold weather hardy(freeze).But I was thinking is there a possibility of the plant being a variegated kind? why not isolate the plant with the spots treat and see if that is the reason for the spots.Remember I don't know just taking a guess.

That's definitely a problem of some sort, not variegation.

Sometimes you can get this effect due to over fertilization along with not enough sunlight too.Are you fertilizing this one and is it under lights? Some Brugs react differently to the same environment and that would explain why none of the others are looking like this if in fact this is the reason.

I have one that looks like that too I think its either not enough light or i just recently fertilized mine with mg and super thrive little heavy handed on the super thrive could have caused that mine look just like yours crunched in toegther if it is something bad the way you have them it will spread like fire. Roots might not have been developed and fertilizer caused this have you given them anything?

I've never fertilized these rooted cuttings- and they are all under plant & sunlight bulbs, on a heated grow mat. they are starting to get root bound, so I did give them a dose of Epsom Salts along with some Miracle grow. The cutting is slowly turning all green- so I think you were right Karyn, it had to be some sort of deficiency. Thanks for all the comments!

Glad to hear that it's greening up. I've been using ES for several years but started using Cal-Mag Plus last year and really like it. I also started with a product called Protekt which is a silica based additive that helps strengthen the cell walls and make plants less susceptible to damage from sucking insects.

When you see foliage like that suddenly appear during the growing season when the plant is fully leafed out and has been getting regular feedings then I would think a mosaic virus is more likely. A mosaic virus won't kill your plant but it's contagious and makes the foliage unsightly.
