Aaaaaah, dirt therapy!

Retreated to the basement this am to water and decided to check out progress of cuttings which were started in 4" plastic pots. Sure enough they were ready so one cutting of almost everything got upsized to a new 6" pot home. Nothing like a little dirt under your nails to sooth a gardener's soul in mid-january, LOL. The rest will have to wait til later cuz its time to sit and support (OK vegetate) the Vikes vs the Cowboys.

Now, lots of folks seem to have lost plants in the big freeze the past couple of weeks. Lots of folks sent me multiple cuttings of specific plants earlier this fall. I wasn't successful with everything I received but most did root and I do have multiples of most I was able to root.

If you sent me cuttings and have lost parent plants, contact me so I can be sure to set aside replacements for you from the cuttings you sent me.

"What happened was, I met a fairly high ranking politician and asked if he was planning to go to Washington. He replied; "I ain't went there yet." maggie, "aint" is very common colloquial language in a lot of countries. Australia and England would be just two of them. It's just another way of saying "haven't". although I have my doubts if this person said "I aint went there yet", more likely they said "aint been there yet" "aint gone yet" so I think youre probably "laying it on a bit thick" as we say. ;) TG

Jack Carpenter had a daylily with a huge, very ruffled, and absolutely gorgeous coral bloom that I wanted badly. With almost 2,000 cultivars and seedlings of my own, I was picky and only interested in something infinitely better than what I already had. I spent several hours on a field trip to Carpenter's on a very hot summer day, walking and walking to look at his daylilies to decide what I wanted. I finally got my turn to run around in the golf cart with Jack, and picked out three, including the coral. Everything I wanted he said WAS NOT FOR SALE. I even offered to just buy some pollen from a fabulous red, but nothing doing. It may be that now Mark is running the business, you might be able to get it. It had no name at that time. I did learn a couple of things on that trip to Carpenter's. If I were ever to sell daylilies, I would isolate those that are not for sale and put them elsewhere. I would not want my customers to waste their time looking for daylilies they want to purchase, only to find out later that the ones they took the time to choose are unavailable. I've also come to realize that daylilies that look fabulous when grown in a semi-hothouse environment may not necessarily look so great when grown out in full sun. Nancy

I just noted that I wrote I wasnt putting a essential oil recipe in there for cleaning wooden floors, but there is one in there. Note though, that I havent ever used that recipe as I dont have wood floors, so I cant 100% say it wont take the shine off. If you want to try it, just do a test spot in a hidden area. Also, I dont know if I can give people my e-mail address if they want a printable version of this? Or my environmental group on myspace? Can I? Will someone please tell me so that I can put this info down if someone wants me to send them out a printable copy? Oh, and sorry it took me so long to get this up online sylviatexas! Thanks, sammie

I just realized that I may have given the wrong impression by saying lots of afternoon sun. Its dappled sun most of the day, sun only on top crown "mushroom shaped area" only, for 2-3 hours, then dappled again. It isn't in 'blazing sun" much at all.... And lower part is dappled sun/shade all the time. Since this is in a lower "pocket" surrounded by ponds, probably slightly higher humidity than usual. During the summer, I can hang my "Lowes clearance" $3 orchids that need "rejuevenating" out there, and they take off like gangbusters. I am VERY positive Mary A is appreciative that I took the time to find knowlegeable help and that she doesn't have to depend on her hillbilly red-neck mom buying whatever is on sale at Lowes. She forgets I have pictures of her hunting crawdaddies in the creek at the farm... Thanks!

Just wanted to thank you for your awesome generosity- you gave me so many plants this fall- most have rooted! I too was down in the basement watering my plants today, they also need re-potting. I'm sorry that the last box of cuttings I sent you weren't doing very well, if there's anything that I have in the spring that you'd like, please let me know.. Lucky you, you got to get your hands dirty...I've been SOO tempted just because my hands miss the dirt!!...lol

I got LOTS of flower bed duty once the ground dries out.

And ya, glad the Vikes won :)

That's a really nice offer. Things like that make this forum special and different from most of the other GW forums.

I'd go crazy if I couldn't play in the dirt over the winter but working in the greenhouse still isn't the same, for me anyway. I do enjoy it but I'd rather be working outside even if it's with container plants. Being down here makes me want to move so badly. I wish my older kids wanted to go. It's such a pleasure to wake up to warm sunny skies and not worry about snow, ice and freezing temps. Not only that but real estate is so cheap here now. You can find a gorgeous home in Boca or even Coral Gables for 600K or even less. The last time we were looking about 6 years ago the same homes were almost double that!

I know what you mean about being there Karyn...We go to Tampa/Indian Shores every summer and LOVE the warm :)

I wouldn't be able to grow 1/2 the plants there that I can grow here though.

Tampa's beautiful but too cold. We go to that area in the spring but I'd never consider going there in the winter. If I'm going south, I'm going south! lol Even though you are in zone 8 I think it's much more moderate there then zone 8 on the East Coast. Most of the plants I grow except for landscape stuff is native to zone 9 or warmer. I'd miss my peonies, lilacs and spring bulbs if I was here but think that I'd get over it. lol
