germinating plumeria seeds

I started germinating some plumeria seeds about a week ago and have seen nothing happening above the soil line but the roots are going crazy on some of the varieties. Is this normal? If so how long does it usually take to see growth out of the top of the seed fan? Thanks

Some one here should know, I do have 4 plumeria, never had flowers yet, I will expect them to flower in the Spring when it gets warmer here. Google or find another search engin. I don't know this, plant your seeds as soon as they show that they are ripe, I can't even tell you color they will be. I just do it by instinct. Don't plant them too deep, and they may need warmth to germinate,64F. now I will look it up for my self. don't allow the temperature to go below 50F or they will croak. I have more instructions but my hands has just given out. I found this information from the Plant book from A to Z It even told me how to propagate from a cutting, and what kind of soil, this is rare information in a plant book, so I can recommend this book, Norma

The literature says 3-14 days. If you have viable seeds that were harvested during the same year that you plant them, I've found it normally takes several days to a week to sprout. This also depends on the temperature, time of year, etc. If you plant them with the seed head submerged and the wing sticking up, you will notice the seed lifting out of the soil when it sprouts. As the literature says, sometimes the outer casing or sheath will get stuck on the cotyledons. If that happens, it is occasionally necessary to help the sheath off. (I use tweezers) Be careful, as you can easily damage the seedling or pull it out of the soil. John

I bought my seeds from bloomingplumerias on eBay and had almost 100% germination rate on all three sets of seeds (as well as the mystery seeds they threw in for free). I used their method which was to moisten a paper towel, put the seeds in between the layers, and slip it into a ziplock Baggie with the top left open. I didn't have to remoisten. I taped the Baggie upright (so the seeds had the wing pointing up) in my bedroom on a wall that the sun hits most of the day by a window where it was warm. Most germinated within 3-7 days, some a little longer. When the root was half an inch or so, I peeled the husk and membrane off the cotyledons and put them with the cotyledons sticking out of perlite/cactus mix in clear plastic cups. Now that they've got a real set of leaves, I'm transplanting into gallon pots.

Hi plumienewbiesd, the black jet/nozzle on the top spray the water like umbrella its for watering the pots. uunder the black is the blue jet/nozzle its for humidity (spraying the water in very light quantity). In the following picture at left top picture you can see 1) 2 Programmable Irrigation Controller working with batteries. The first is GARDENA and the second GALCON. I use the first for my plants and the second only for my plumeria seedlings. 2. On the Controller is connected F20 plastic black pipe (you can see it on the ground)which going between the pots. 3. with F20 is connected a thiner black plastic pipe and to the end is connected with the black jet/nozzle and another thiner black pipe is connected with the blue jet/nozzle. With the above automatic watering and spraying system, 3 minutes every day is well enough for watering and all my plumerias pots and to get the needed humidity. Of course every 5-7 days I fertilize the seedlings with a can. sorry because my English ys n't in high level, I hope to be understood.

Thanks everyone, for your input! I think my problem has been not having fresh seed, because I've had one variety do very well and another variety not germinate at all. When I questioned the plumeria nursery that I purchased the seed from, they said that their seed was always fresh, but I have my doubts. Thanks again! By the way, I have one seedling, only about 2-3 months old, and 4 inches high, that is branching from every leaf node. There are four branches so far. Another one about the same age and height, that is also branching. Have you had this happen very often? Kevin

Hi there, whilst I have grown and flowered Plumerias from cuttings and started many from seeds, I'm not sure if I can help you with this.
Have you asked it over on the Gweb 'Plumeria' forum yet as I'm sure the folks on there will be able to help you better..(apart from Norma's help above of course!)...and also answer any other ??'s about their cultivation you may have.
